Sandman is a curious TV show. The interesting part is that I tried to read the comics by Neil Gaiman and I didn't move a lot forward. I remember that I read only one or two editions and gave up. It is a very heavy comic, not so easy to read. The Netflix version transferred a bit of the heaviness and sometimes some episodes are slow and I had to force myself to watch it. But right now I have only 2 episodes to finish the recently released season 2 and I don't regret forcing myself to continue watching when I felt some inner forces to give up watching it. The show brings some interesting debates, which I wanted to bring in here.

To be frank, the show is a mixture of human mythologies, maybe that was the point of Neil Gaiman to try to unify all the world's mythology in one history, so maybe humanity has one big bag with gods and supernatural figures. The main character is Morpheus, the Greek god of dreams, but he also has other names in the show "Sandman" and "Dream". The Sandman name is related to the European culture's mythical creature that used sand to make people dream. In the show, he uses the sand as a tool. But the author brings biblical and Norse mythology to the Show as well. We have at the same time a Hell concept from Christianity with the fallen angel Lucifer and the God concept, which also participates in the show, however, above Morpheus and his other endless brothers and sisters, you can only find Time and Darkness, which aren't gods but primordial beings. But one interesting concept that I enjoyed the debate was about Destiny.

In the show, Destiny is an enigmatic character, always carrying his book where supposedly has all the history of every character in the show written in there, including their future and tips about how to solve current problems. He is usually seen as the wisest brother of the 7 endless since he can give suggestions of how to solve problems. That matches a bit of the concept of destiny, which is a belief that our history is already decided and many people associate accomplishments with their own destiny, which was pre-written in a sort of book by a deity, like God.

But then comes the surprise. In one episode where Morpheus is in some trouble, he meets with Destiny, asking for help, and maybe some tips from his book. Finally, Destiny shares the book with Morpheus, showing him what his future is about. And for the surprise of everyone, it is empty. Actually, the destiny of everyone isn't pre-written beforehand, and Morpheus' brother finishes by saying that his acts will decide what will be written in there. So for the author, destiny isn't something already established but in reality is a history that is a product of our actions and decisions, not for any other supernatural force outside that.

Probably the goal of Neil Gaiman was to bring gods and mythological protagonists closer to humanity. The main lesson of this season was how Morpheus started to show more of his human attributes, like love and sometimes putting this beyond his own duties. But destiny concept brought was amazing in my point of view. I was expecting a TV show closer to what human mythology from deities brings, but in the end, we are all owners of our destiny and nothing is pre-written anywhere.

Sandman é uma série de TV curiosa. O interessante é que tentei ler os quadrinhos do Neil Gaiman e não avancei muito. Lembro que li apenas uma ou duas edições e desisti. É uma história muito pesada, não tão fácil de ler. A versão da Netflix transferiu um pouco do peso e, às vezes, alguns episódios são lentos e tive que me forçar a assistir. Mas, no momento, faltam apenas 2 episódios para terminar a 2ª temporada, lançada recentemente, e não me arrependo de ter me forçado a continuar assistindo quando senti uma força interior que me fez desistir. A série traz alguns debates interessantes, que eu queria trazer aqui.

Para ser franco, a série é uma mistura de mitologias humanas. Talvez esse fosse o objetivo de Neil Gaiman: tentar unificar toda a mitologia do mundo em uma única história, para que a humanidade pudesse ter um grande grupo de deuses e figuras sobrenaturais. O personagem principal é Morfeu, o deus grego dos sonhos, mas ele também tem outros nomes nas séries: "Sandman" e "Dream". O nome Sandman está relacionado à criatura mítica da cultura europeia que usava areia para fazer as pessoas sonharem. Na série, ele usa a areia como ferramenta. Mas o autor também traz mitologia bíblica e nórdica para a série. Temos, ao mesmo tempo, um conceito de Inferno do cristianismo com o anjo caído Lúcifer e o conceito de Deus, que também participa da série. No entanto, acima de Morfeu e seus outros irmãos e irmãs infinitos, você só encontra Tempo e Escuridão, que não são deuses, mas seres primordiais. Mas um conceito interessante que gostei do debate foi sobre Destino.

Na série, Destino é um personagem enigmático, sempre carregando seu livro onde supostamente está escrito toda a história de cada personagem da série, incluindo seu futuro e dicas sobre como resolver problemas atuais. Isso combina um pouco com o conceito de destino, que é a crença de que nossa história já está decidida, e muitas pessoas associam conquistas ao seu próprio destino, que foi pré-escrito em uma espécie de livro por uma divindade, como Deus.

Mas então vem a surpresa. Em um episódio em que Morpheus está em apuros, ele se encontra com Destiny pedindo ajuda e talvez algumas dicas de seu livro. Finalmente, Destiny compartilha o livro com Morpheus, mostrando-lhe o que o futuro reserva. E, para a surpresa de todos, ele é vazio. Na verdade, o destino de todos não está pré-escrito, e o irmão de Morpheus termina dizendo que seus atos decidirão o que será escrito ali. Portanto, para o autor, o destino não é algo já estabelecido, mas sim uma história que é produto de nossas ações e decisões, e não de qualquer outra força sobrenatural externa.

Provavelmente o objetivo de Neil Gaiman era aproximar deuses e protagonistas mitológicos da humanidade. A principal lição desta temporada foi como Morfeu começou a mostrar mais de seus atributos humanos, como o amor, às vezes colocando isso além de seus próprios deveres. Mas o conceito de destino trazido foi incrível, do meu ponto de vista. Eu esperava uma série mais próxima do que a mitologia humana traz de divindades, mas, no final, somos todos donos do nosso destino e nada está pré-escrito em lugar nenhum.
