This time, we will take you with us to Cuba. We spent about 3 weeks in Cuba and will be focusing on one city/spot at a time. So expect about 5-6 posts about different hot spots in Cuba. **This post will be about all the good and the bad we have seen and experienced in the unique city "Villa de San Cristóbal de la Habana" or commonly known as Havana.** Have fun reading! **Please refer to the link below if you prefer to read in german:**

We started our trip with our backpacks, which have never let us down even on our trip around the world, well packed from my parents' house to Frankfurt Airport. We landed very late in the evening and it was already dark outside. In the city, because of the broken streets, we sometimes drove through the dark alleys at a walking pace. We were more than a bit worried about our luggage in the unlocked trunk when hordes of children ran after the car. Luckily unfounded, everything stayed where it was supposed to be😅

After a bit of a drive, we luckily arrived at our Casa Particular. As soon as we got out of the car and rang the bell, our host threw the front door keys for the locks out of the highest window in the picture above. Of course, there are no automatic door openers. Luckily we can both catch well 😅 Casa particulares are private accommodations from families, who have a room in their house or apartment made available for guests after receiving special government approval. So you kind of live with a host family, who is also very happy to provide breakfast, lunch, and/or dinner for a small surcharge. A fruit plate with the tastiest mango in the world is always included.

We saw magnificent baroque buildings and spacious squares as well as dilapidated buildings. We also drank lots of mojitos and tried not to be fooled by con artists, the so-called Jineteros who are targeting the tourist currency CUC. ![P1080394.JPG](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/timoremoti/Ep3eNY721ufjZD5yCyy226sB2FWuNbZk9vHL4G1o2G5V5LNyR8Q2MufjBXpR49zCsvZ.JPG) While tourists usually can't get their hands on CUP (Cuban Pesos), Cubans can exchange CUC for CUP. One CUC is approximately 25 CUP. These two parallel currencies make the rip-off very easy as the prices in CUP for the Cubans are a lot lower than the prices in CUC for tourists. ![Trenner Kuba.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/timoremoti/Eq7NoXv84KhLPRXMRBfuA9Kq1788rRfcSo7xiwFrp1uUQYsQM16MKDsvWRZALwbnFKr.png)

Right at the beginning, we fell for the typical scam of con artists. Two Cubans approached us and said that they wanted to show us a great salsa bar with even better mojitos. We had just arrived in town and were still very gullible, so we went with them. In the end, nothing was going on in the bar and we paid almost three times as much for the mojitos as normal in Cuba. We later found out that the Cubans lure tourists to these bars and end up sharing the profit from the completely overpriced offers with the waiter. Sometimes you just learn from experience. At least we had some nice photos😅 This will not happen to us again! But we didn't let that spoil the city for us and just kept going. Of course, we were a bit more cautious when dealing with the very open Cubans when the next person wanted to take us to the next "Best Mojito Bar in town". 😉

Unfortunately, we didn't have time to go in. In front of the church is also the Palacio del Conde de Lombillo.

Here is the church of the same name and the old trading house Lonja del Comercio. The Church also houses the Museum of Sacred Art. However, it can be a bit windy as you can see in the picture 😅

--- **Plaza Vieja** ![P1080459.JPG](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/timoremoti/EqfHGKEWeKTFKLdaKbmHbKRRB7QQ9HZBHxLJKVvG2r5snFE7tUh4YDRmxKpADzdbYAa.JPG) The most beautiful place in old Havana and the ideal spot to look for a restaurant directly at Plaza Vieja or in the immediate vicinity. There are very well preserved buildings with different architectural styles here. The buildings have quite beautiful facades with great columns and arcades.

But even when it's raining, it's a great place to sit in a bar and watch the rain while drinking a good mojito.

For years Fidel Castro spoke to the masses here. The square can´t be missed with the huge depictions of Che Guevara and Fidel Castro on the buildings. We dripped and of course, we had way too little water with us... And whenever we wanted to take a break, a Cuban came straight towards us to talk to us about something or show us the next best place to see. We therefore strongly recommend that you do not imitate us. Either go there by car, travel to Cuba in the winter months, or simply take enough water with you. Don't do it as we did. The price was great there, the taste was great and the music was great too. We can only recommend you to stop by there and just relax for a moment.

At the end of our stay in Havana, we didn't want to miss the typical ride in one of the great vintage cars. So we took one from our Casa Particular to the Viazul bus station. The vintage cars shine from the outside, but the inside often doesn't even have the interior lining. The seat cushions have holes, the whole car rattles and it stinks of petrol everywhere. Oh, and of course, there are no seat belts either. They weren't mandatory in the 1950s when these cars could still be imported to Cuba. But a bit of courage is also a necessary prerequisite of a trip to Cuba. The drivers are usually very talkative and have funny ideas. So while we were talking in Spanish, our driver wanted to sell me a Cuban woman so that she could get a German visa. I was like: What? Why do you ask someone who is traveling with his partner something like this? I will never forget the face of my wife when I later told her what we had been talking about as she doesn´t speak Spanish very well😅

Los ging es mit unseren Backpacking Rucksäcken, die uns schon bei unserer Weltreise nie im Stich gelassen haben, gut bepackt vom Haus meiner Eltern aus an den Frankfurter Flughafen. Wir sind sehr spät am Abend mit dem Flieger gelandet und es war schon dunkel. In der Stadt sind wir dann wegen der kaputten Straßen zum Teil im Schrittempo durch die dunklen Gassen gefahren. Wir hatten echt ein bisschen Angst um unser Gepäck im unverschlossenen Kofferraum, als Horden von Kindern dem Auto hinterher gerannt sind. Zum Glück unbegründet. 😅

Irgendwann sind wir dann zum Glück bei unserem Casa Particular angekommen. Kaum ausgestiegen, hat uns unser Gastgeber nach dem Klingeln auch einfach mal aus dem höchsten Fenster auf dem Bild oben den Schlüssel für die Tür runtergeworfen. Türdrücker gibts natürlich keine. Zum Glück können wir beide gut fangen. 😅 Casa Particulares sind private Unterkünfte von Familien, die in ihrem Haus oder ihrer Wohnung nach spezieller Genehmigung durch die Regierung ein Zimmer für Gäste freigeräumt haben. Man lebt also sozusagen bei einer Gastfamilie, die auch sehr gern Frühstück, Mittag- und/ oder Abendessen gegen einen kleinen Aufpreis bereitstellen. Ein Obstteller mit der leckersten Mango auf der Welt ist immer dabei.

Ein CUC entspricht ungefähr 25 CUP. Gleich am Anfang sind wir auf die typische Masche der Trickbetrüger reingefallen. Zwei Kubaner haben uns angesprochen, dass sie uns eine tolle Salsabar mit super Mojitos zeigen wollen. Wir waren gerade erst in der Stadt angekommen und noch sehr gutgläubig, also sind wir mitgegangen. In der Bar war letztendlich nichts los und für die Mojitos haben wir fast das Dreifache gezahlt, als auf Kuba normal ist. Später haben wir erfahren, dass die Kubaner die Touristen in diese Bars locken und sich den Profit aus dem völlig überteuerten Geschäft mit dem Kellner am Ende teilen. Manchmal lernt man eben nur aus Erfahrung. Zumindest hatten wir ein paar schöne Fotos 😅 Das passiert uns sicherlich nicht nochmal! Wir haben uns die Stadt deswegen aber trotzdem nicht verderben lassen und haben einfach weitergemacht. Natürlich waren wir im Umgang mit den sehr offenen Kubanern dann doch etwas vorsichtiger wenn der Nächste uns mit in die nächste "Beste Mojito Bar der Stadt" nehmen wollte 😉

Zeitlich sind wir leider nicht dazu gekommen reinzugehen. Vor der Kirche befindet sich zudem der Palacio del Conde de Lombillo.

Hier stehen die gleichnamige Kirche und das alte Handelshaus Lonja del Comercio. In der Kirche befindet sich auch das Museum der Kirchenkunst. Es kann allerdings etwas windig sein, wie ihr auf dem Bild seht. 😅

Auf diesem Platz befinden sich sehr gut erhaltene Gebäude mit unterschiedlichen Baustilen. Die Gebäude haben schöne Fassaden mit tollen Säulen und Arkaden.

Aber auch bei Regen ein super Ort um sich in eine Bar zu setzen und dem Regen zuzuschauen, während man einen guten Mojito trinkt.

Jahrelang sprach Fidel Castro hier zu den Massen. Wir haben getropft und hatten natürlich viel zu wenig Wasser dabei... Und immer, wenn wir mal eine Pause machen wollten, kam direkt wieder ein Kubaner, der uns was aufquatschen wollte. Wir empfehlen deshalb eindringlich, es uns nicht nachzumachen. Entweder mit dem Auto dorthin fahren, in den Wintermonaten nach Kuba reisen oder auch einfach genug Wasser mitnehmen. Macht es auf jeden Fall nicht so wie wir. Dort war der Preis gut, der Geschmack super und die Musik war auch genial. Wir können euch nur empfehlen dort mal vorbeizuschauen.

Zum Abschluss unseres Havanna-Aufenthalts wollten wir uns eine typische Fahrt mit einem der tollen Oldtimer nicht entgehen lassen. Also sind wir von unserem Casa Particular zur Viazul-Busstation mit einem gefahren. Von außen glänzen die Oldtimer, im Inneren ist aber häufig nicht mal mehr die Innenverkleidung vorhanden. Die Sitzpolster haben Löcher, das ganze Auto scheppert und es stinkt überall nach Benzin. Achja und Sitzgurte gibts natürlich auch keine. Die waren in den 50er Jahren, als diese Autos noch nach Kuba importiert werden konnten nicht vorgeschrieben. Aber ein bisschen Mut gehört für eine Reise nach Kuba auch dazu. Die Fahrer sind meist sehr gesprächig und haben lustige Ideen. So wollte unser Fahrer mir, während wir uns auf Spanisch unterhielten, eine kubanische Frau andrehen, damit die ein deutsches Visum erhält. Wieso fragt man sowas jemandem der offensichtlich mit seiner Partnerin reist? 😅
