Hello everyone, I hope you're doing great today, my fellow Otakus, dear The Anime Realm community. This time, I want to share a new review with you; I'm going to talk a little about Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai. You probably remember it as Las Aventuras de Fly. If you're like me, you remember exactly where you were when the original series just... ended, out of nowhere. Just like that, they cut it off at the best moment, during the most epic part, and left an entire generation with an indescribable emptiness in our chests. That's why, when they announced in 2020 that they were going to do a full, well-made remake, I felt a mix of brutal happiness and total panic. The fear of "what if they ruin it?" But let me tell you, what a pleasant surprise we got. To start, let's talk about the visuals, about how this thing looks... it's insane! From episode one, it blew my mind. It's not just "good animation," no... the production quality, episode after episode, is above almost anything else you're watching right now. Remember Dragon Ball Super? How you'd get some spectacular fights, but then some episodes would look... well, let's not kid ourselves, they looked horrible? Well, now imagine they remove all the ugly parts, all the filler, and leave only the incredible stuff... but for the entire episode. That's what The Adventure of Dai feels like. Honestly, coming from Toei Animation, it's a very pleasant surprise. The series is GORGEOUS, just like that, in all caps. The color palette is vibrant, saturated to the perfect point where everything pops off the screen—a true feast for the eyes, really. The character designs... wow, you can feel that touch, that Akira Toriyama DNA, even though he wasn't directly involved here. They feel classic, giving you that nostalgia, but at the same time, they look modern and super polished. You can tell they poured not just a ton of money into this, but also immense love to make the remake look spectacular. >Hola a todos, espero que estén super bien hoy, amigos Otakus, querida comunidad The Anime Realm, en esta ocasión les quiero compartir una nueva reseña, les hablaré un poco de Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai.. seguro la recuerdan como Las Aventuras de Fly.. si son como yo, se acuerdan perfecto de dónde estaban cuando la serie original, de la nada, se acabó.. así, sin más.. la cortaron en el mejor momento, en la parte más épica, y nos dejaron a toda una generación con un vacío en el pecho que ni les cuento, por eso, cuando en 2020 anunciaron que iban a hacer un remake completo, uno bien hecho, sentí una mezcla de felicidad brutal y pánico total. El miedo de "¿y si la arruinan?".. pero déjenme les digo algo: qué grata sorpresa nos llevamos, para empezar, hablemos de lo visual, de cómo se ve esto.. qué locura!
Desde el capítulo uno me voló la cabeza, no es que sea "buena animación" y ya, no.. la calidad de producción está, capítulo a capítulo, por encima de casi cualquier cosa que estén viendo ahora mismo.. se acuerdan de Dragon Ball Super? ¿Que de repente tenías unas peleas espectaculares, pero después venían capítulos que se veían… pues, para qué nos hacemos tontos, se veían horribles? Bueno, ahora imaginen que le quitan toda esa parte fea, todo el relleno, y dejan solo la parte increíble… pero en todo el capítulo.. así se siente The Adventure of Dai, la verdad, viniendo de Toei Animation, es una sorpresa de las buenas.
Es que la serie es PRECIOSA, así, con mayúsculas.. la paleta de colores es vibrante, saturada justo en el punto perfecto para que todo salte de la pantalla, un manjar para los ojos, de verdad, los diseños de los personajes… uf, se nota esa manita, ese ADN de Akira Toriyama, aunque él no estuviera metido directamente aquí. Let's talk about the CGI... this is where I have mixed feelings, honestly. Most of the time, the CGI is pretty good and doesn't take you out of the scene at all. They use it for the biggest monsters or the craziest attacks, and it almost always blends well with the 2D art... but suddenly... there are moments when it doesn't. There are some fights where the jump from 2D to 3D is so obvious that it clashes horribly. It feels... weird, out of place. It's that moment when you're completely absorbed in the fight, at the climax, and suddenly you feel like you're watching a video game cutscene. In those specific moments, it honestly takes away a bit of the magic from the combat. The fight between Dai and his father in his dragon form, for example, which is an epic moment in the story, felt a bit empty to me with so much CGI, I don't know... Look, it's not something that ruins the series, not by a long shot, but it was my only consistent, albeit small, complaint. Now, if you've never played a Dragon Quest game in your life, don't worry at all... this anime is the best gateway to the franchise, I assure you. It does an incredible job of easing you into its world. The story gives you just enough information to understand everything without it feeling overwhelming, without throwing a thousand facts in your face. Right away, you're understanding the kingdoms, cultures, races, and all the lore behind it... not to mention the magic system! You have everything: weapons, items, spells, and sword attacks with different classes like Mage, Sage, or Hero. >Pero, porque siempre hay un "pero", ¿no? Hablemos del CGI.. aquí es donde tengo sentimientos encontrados, la verdad.. la mayor parte del tiempo el CGI está bastante bien y no te saca de la escena para nada, lo usan para los monstruos más gigantes o los ataques más locos, y casi siempre se mezcla bien con el dibujo.. pero de repente… hay momentos en que no. Hay unas peleas donde el salto del 2D al 3D es tan obvio que desentona, pero horrible.. se siente… raro, como fuera de lugar, es justo ese momento en que estás metidísimo en la pelea, en el clímax, y de golpe sientes que estás viendo la cinemática de un videojuego. En esos momentos puntuales, la neta es que sí le quita un poco de magia al combate, la pelea de Dai contra su papá en su forma de dragón, por ejemplo, que es un momentazo épico de la historia, con tanto CGI se me hizo sentir un poco vacía, no sé.. a ver, no es algo que arruine la serie ni de chiste, pero fue como mi única queja constante, aunque sea chiquita.
Ahora, si ustedes en su vida han tocado un juego de Dragon Quest, tranquilos, no se me preocupen para nada.. este anime es la mejor puerta de entrada a la franquicia, se los aseguro, hace un trabajo increíble para meterte en su mundo poquito a poco.. la historia te va soltando la información justa para que entiendas todo sin que se sienta pesado, sin que te estén aventando mil datos a la cara. Al toque ya estás entendiendo de los reinos, las culturas, las razas y toda la mitología que hay detrás.. ni hablar del sistema de magia! They are these very strange, nonsensical words like "Frizz," "Sizz," "Woosh," and my personal favorite, I swear: "Kacrackle." There's something so catchy and fun about it. Look, I'll put it this way: remember how we've all, at some point in our lives, shouted "Kamehameha!" at the top of our lungs? Yes or no? Well, this series has that exact same energy. When the characters shout their spells, it feels like you're watching Dragon Ball, no joke. After a few episodes, you'll be yelling "Avan Strash!" right along with Dai. It's part of why the series is so, so fun. It gives you all those classic RPG elements—spells, classes, kingdoms—but all wrapped up in an explosive shonen package that makes every episode feel like you're actually playing the game. And since I mentioned Dragon Ball, it's impossible to watch this and not think of the similarities. The aesthetic is the same; they look a lot alike. The protagonist, Dai, has a lot in common with kid Goku. He's a spiky-haired kid, abandoned in the wild, raised by an adoptive grandfather who adores him with all his soul, he's ridiculously strong for his size, and has a super pure heart because he was raised right. But here, right here, is where the series sets itself apart and truly shines. While Goku's main motivation, especially at the beginning, was simply to fight stronger people, Dai always dreamed of being a hero. He doesn't just fight to protect his friends; he fights to fulfill a purpose, to achieve an ideal. In that sense, he's much more like modern shonen protagonists, like Deku from My Hero Academia or even Naruto. He is driven by the desire to be a hero. That internal motivation is what makes his journey so incredible to follow. The story isn't just about him getting stronger; it's about him figuring out what the hell it means to be a hero. As he faces more and more enemies, he goes through a full-blown identity crisis. He grew up surrounded by good monsters who were his family, so when he has to fight other monsters, he obviously starts questioning everything. The world isn't black and white, and Dai has to learn to deal with that. He starts as a fairly simple, energetic character but develops into someone much more interesting and mature throughout the story. >Y una de las cosas que más me encanta, que es una joyita, son los nombres de los hechizos.. son estas palabras rarísimas que no significan nada, como "Frizz", "Sizz", "Woosh" y mi favorito personal, se los juro: "Kacrackle". Hay algo que te engancha, que es demasiado divertido en eso, miren, se los pongo así de fácil: ¿se acuerdan cómo todos, alguna vez en la vida, hemos gritado "¡Kamehameha!" a todo pulmón? ¿Sí o no? Bueno, esta serie tiene exactamente esa misma energía.. cuando los personajes gritan sus hechizos, se siente como si estuvieras viendo Dragon Ball, no es broma, después de unos capítulos, ustedes van a estar gritando "¡Avan Strash!" junto con Dai. Es parte de por qué la serie es tan, pero tan divertida.. te da todos esos elementos de un RPG clásico —hechizos, clases, reinos— pero todo envuelto en un paquete de shonen explosivo que hace que cada capítulo se sienta como si de verdad estuvieras jugando.. ya que menciono Dragon Ball, es que es imposible ver esto y no pensar en las similitudes.
La estética es la misma, se parecen un montón, el prota, Dai, tiene muchísimas cosas de Goku cuando era niño.. es un chamaquito de pelo parado, abandonado en la naturaleza, criado por un abuelito adoptivo que lo adora con toda su alma, es ridículamente fuerte para su tamaño y tiene un corazón súper puro porque lo criaron bien. Pero aquí, justo aquí, es donde la serie se despega y de verdad brilla, mientras que la motivación principal de Goku, sobre todo al principio, era simplemente pelear con gente más fuerte, Dai siempre soñó con ser un héroe.. él no pelea solo para proteger a sus amigos; pelea para cumplir un propósito, para alcanzar un ideal.. en ese sentido, se parece mucho más a los protas modernos de shonen, como Deku de My Hero Academia o el mismo Naruto.
Lo mueve el deseo de ser un héroe.. esa motivación interna es lo que hace que su viaje sea tan increíble de seguir, la historia no se trata solo de que se haga más fuerte; se trata de que descubra qué carajos significa ser un héroe. Conforme se enfrenta a más y más enemigos, le da una crisis de identidad con todo.. él creció rodeado de monstruos buenos que eran su familia, entonces cuando le toca pelear contra otros monstruos, obvio se empieza a cuestionar todo, el mundo no es blanco y negro, y Dai tiene que aprender a lidiar con eso. The character development here is phenomenal, on another level, seriously. One of the most amazing things about the series is how characters start one way and end up as something completely different. The series develops them much more than you'd imagine, and it all feels super natural, not forced at all. Let's talk about Pop. The guy starts off as the cowardly character, the one there for comic relief, and his evolution into a brave and super-powerful mage is one of the best character arcs I've ever seen, I swear. Then there's Maam. At first, you think she's going to be the typical supportive girl in the group, and that's it, but no way! She becomes a beast, a martial arts machine. Her journey to find her own strength is just incredible. It's like that with all the main characters; they grow, change, mature, and that makes you genuinely grow fond of them, to care about them. As for the story, the pacing is pretty good most of the time. The series knows exactly when to slow things down for emotional moments and when to slam the accelerator for the action. The adventure has that charming old-school vibe, and the chemistry between the protagonists keeps you glued to the screen. But, I have to say, especially towards the final arc, some episodes feel a bit slow. There are parts where half an episode is just talk, pure dialogue. You spend all week hyped to the max, waiting for the next showdown, and they give you 15 minutes of pure strategy or philosophical discussions. Even though that talk is important, honestly, those moments did frustrate me a little. It's not a major issue, but just so you're aware. So, what's the final verdict? Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai is a masterpiece, plain and simple. It took a classic we loved that was left unfinished and gave it the incredible, complete adaptation it always deserved. It's a series with a huge heart, visually spectacular (most of the time), and with some of the best character development you'll find in modern shonen. It's the perfect mix of old-school adventure and new-school character depth. I give it a solid 8.5/10. The sometimes-clashing CGI and those slow episodes dock it a few points for me, but only just. It's a series I feel is criminally underrated and deserves so much more love. If you love shonen, if you love fantasy adventures, you have to watch it. And well... that's all for today. El desarrollo de personajes aquí es fenomenal, de otro nivel, en serio, una de las cosas más brutales de la serie es cómo los personajes arrancan de una forma y terminan siendo algo completamente diferente.. la serie los desarrolla mucho más de lo que te imaginas, y todo se siente súper natural, nada forzado.. a ver, hablemos de Pop. El tipo empieza siendo el personaje miedoso, el que está ahí para hacer chistes, y su evolución hasta convertirse en un mago valiente y súper poderoso es uno de los mejores arcos que he visto, se los juro. Luego está Maam.. al principio, tú piensas que va a ser la típica chica del grupo que apoya y ya, pero ¡qué va!
Se convierte en una bestia, una máquina en las artes marciales, su viaje para encontrar su propia fuerza es simplemente increíble.. así con todos los personajes principales, crecen, cambian, maduran, y eso hace que de verdad te encariñes con ellos, que te importen. En cuanto a la historia, casi todo el tiempo va a un ritmo bastante bueno.. la serie sabe perfecto cuándo bajarle dos rayitas para los momentos emotivos y cuándo pisar el acelerador a fondo para la acción. La aventura tiene esa onda de la vieja escuela que enamora, y la química entre los protas te mantiene pegado a la pantalla, pero, tengo que decirlo, sobre todo hacia el arco final, hay capítulos que se sienten un poco lentos. Hay partes donde medio capítulo es pura plática, puro diálogo.. tú te pasas toda la semana con el hype a mil, esperando el siguiente enfrentamiento, y te meten 15 minutos de pura estrategia o de que se ponen a filosofar.. aunque esa plática es importante, la verdad es que esos momentos sí me desesperaron un poquito. No es algo grave, pero para que lo tengan en cuenta.
Entonces, ¿cuál es el veredicto final? Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai es una gran obra, ssí de simple. Agarró un clásico que amábamos y que dejaron a medias, y le dio la adaptación increíble y completa que se merecía desde siempre.. es una serie con un corazón enorme, visualmente espectacular (casi siempre) y con uno de los mejores desarrollos de personajes que van a encontrar en el shonen de ahora. Es la mezcla perfecta entre la aventura a la antigua y la profundidad de personajes de la nueva escuela, le doy un sólido 8.5/10. El CGI que a veces desentona y esos capítulos lentos le quitan puntos, para mí, pero por poquito, es una serie que siento que está criminalmente infravalorada y que merece muchísimo más amor.. si les encanta el shonen, si aman las aventuras de fantasía, tienen que verla, y bueno.. hasta aquí todo por hoy, espero que les haya gustado esta reseña, cuidense mucho!
