MONOMAD CHALLENGE : Better days for them [ENG-ESP]

In the past I have written about what I have learned about donkeys and reflected on valuable lessons that the natural world teaches us. Stopping to appreciate these things has helped me to value these animals that are associated with hard work, lack of intelligence and other aspects. But the reality is far from all that. In the last few days I had the opportunity to be away from home, and I had the privilege of seeing many of these animals. Today I share with you some of the memories I captured. > En el pasado escribí lo que había aprendido sobre los burros y reflexionaba sobre valiosas lecciones que nos enseña el mundo natural. Detenerme a apreciar éstas cosas me han ayudado a valorar a éstos animales que son asociado con trabajo duro, falta de inteligencia entre otros aspectos. Pero la realidad dista mucho de todo eso. En los últimos días tuve la oportunidad de estar fuera de casa, y tuve el privilegio de ver muchos de estos ejemplares. In this area, people spend time cultivating in the fields, either near or far from home. Punished by the lack of rain, the plants struggle to survive, while the animals take advantage of the water in the rivers when their owners take them there. However, it is still hard to see them carrying heavy loads of agricultural goods or even overweight people. Even when I am sold on the idea that they can carry that weight, I keep wondering to myself: *"But what will the animal itself think of that?"*.

En dicho sector las personas dedican tiempo a cultivar en los campos, bien sea cerca de casa o lejos de ella. Castigados por la falta de lluvia, las plantas luchan por sobrevivir, mientras que los animales aprovechan de tomar agua en los rios cuando sus dueños los llevan. Sin embargo, no deja de ser duro verlos cargar grandes pesos, bien sea de mercancía agrícola o personas que hasta tienen sobrepeso. Aún cuando me venden la idea de que ellos pueden soportar ése peso, no dejo de preguntarme en mis adentros: *"¿Pero qué opinará de eso el mismo animalito?"*

It is natural that we like to see them in complete freedom as we travel the dusty roads. However, several of them are tied to ropes, with enough mobility to eat from the adjacent vegetation. These days I saw donkeys of various colors and shades. Some with short, close-fitting hair. Others had slightly longer hair, giving the appearance that they were wearing a warm garment. A few even seemed to have a funny haircut, as if to mark the difference between so many similar neighbors.

Es natural que nos guste verlos en completa libertad mientras transitamos los polvorientos caminos. No obstante, varios están sujetos a sogas, con una movilidad suficiente para comer de la vegetación adyacente. En éstos días vi burros de varios colores y tonos. Algunos con un pelo corto y ceñido a su cuerpo. Otros tenían el pelo un tanto más largo, dando la apariencia que tenían puesta una abrigada prenda de vestir. Incluso, unos pocos parecía que tenían un gracioso corte de cabello, como queriendo marcar la diferencia entre tantos vecinos parecidos.

It is to be expected that not all of them felt comfortable with our presence. When we tried to approach them or put our hand on their heads, they tended to move away a little, as if out of fear or perhaps dislike. If I was treated inconsiderately on a regular basis it would not be easy for me to welcome a stranger. But fortunately, several of them seemed to be curious when they saw us, so they watched us carefully, and when we approached them and petted them, they were very happy. Some even followed us for a few meters. I don't know why, did they want to go with us, or were they just curious?

Es de esperar que no todos se sintieran a gusto con nuestra presencia. Al intentar acercarnos o colocarle la mano en su cabecita solían alejarse un poco, como por miedo o quizás desagrado. Si a mi me trataran con desconsideración de forma regular no sería fácil para mí recibir a un desconocido. Pero afortunadamente varios parece que sentían curiosidad al vernos, así que más bien nos quedaban viendo detenidamente, y al acercarnos y acariciarlos quedaban muy contentos. Unos hasta nos siguieron unos metros. No sé por qué. ¿Quería irse con nosotros? ¿O sencilla curiosidad?

We are determined to go back there and enjoy the benefits again. It probably won't make much difference to the treatment of these animals. However, I am convinced that someday there will be, and for the better. > Tengo aún más fotografías, que quizás muestre luego. Estamos resueltos a volver a ese lugar y volver a disfrutar de sus beneficios. Probablemente no haya mucha diferencia con el trato a éstos animales. Sin embargo, estoy convencido de que algún día sí la habrá, y para mejor.
