Freezing Cold with Snowfall Warning

This morning it was −17 degrees when I woke up around 5:00 a.m., and now it’s around −14 degrees. With the sunshine, I feel much better than I did under the dark morning sky. I wrote about the cold weather yesterday, and we have a snowfall warning for late tonight. So far, the atmosphere has been mild, but in Japanese we have a proverb called “Arashi no mae no shizukesa（嵐の前の静けさthe calm before the storm.”

I mentioned yesterday that I got a backup system, so hopefully I won’t lose power again tonight. Even if I do, at least I won’t have to give up enjoying my online work tomorrow.

Worrying about power, the house, water, firewood, food, and more because of severe weather is not easy. I think water is the most important issue for human life. Luckily, there is spring water near my house, so I can collect water in an emergency. However, I need a car to get to the spring. Electricity is also such an essential source of energy for our lives… phew. Hopefully, I can calm down from this winter tension someday soon.

The road is very icy, and salt is everywhere. The salt and the icy road affect my dog’s paws, so he had to stay on our property today. However, he was full of energy, so I took him to our backyard, into the small forest. I created a narrow path there yesterday, so he knows where to go. There are small patches of pine trees, and they look like they are steadily growing.

I heard a loud cracking sound from the tallest tree in the backyard forest. The cold air creates cracking sounds everywhere here in the mountains. Actually, I like these sounds in the silence. They are beautiful winter sounds, like natural percussion.

The grapevines are sleeping, but I can already see some fresh buds. The apple trees, blueberry bushes, and everything else are sleeping too, yet quietly growing.

My backyard garden is also resting. I love the smooth surface created by the snow.

Oh, my husband found an apple sitting alone in a tree yesterday. I don’t know why it’s still there like that. I’m guessing that someone (crows?) picked the apple, accidentally dropped it, and it got stuck between the branches like this!

大雪警報にともなう寒波

今朝、午前５時ごろに目が覚めたとき、気温はマイナス１７度でした。現在はマイナス１４度くらいです。日差しがあるだけで、暗い朝の空のときよりも、ずいぶん気持ちが楽になります。昨日も寒さについて書きましたが、今夜遅くには大雪注意報が出ています。今のところは穏やかな様子ですが、日本には「嵐の前の静けさ」ということわざがあるように、そんな感じがしています。

昨日、非常用のバックアップシステムを用意したと書きました。今夜また停電しないことを願っていますが、もしそうなっても、明日のオンラインの仕事を諦めなくていいようになるのではないかと思います。

悪天候が続くと、電気、家、水、薪、食べ物など、さまざまなことを心配しながら生活するのは簡単なことではありません。人間にとって、水はやっぱり最も大切なものだと感じます。幸い、家の近くに湧き水があり、緊急時にはそこから水を汲むことができます。ただし、その場所へ行くには車が必要です。電気もまた、私たちの生活に欠かせない大切なエネルギーですよね…。ふう。そろそろ、この冬特有の緊張感から、少しずつ解放されたいです。

道はかなり凍っていて、融雪剤の塩があちこちにまかれています。その塩と冷たく凍った路面の影響で、犬の肉球に負担がかかるため、今日は敷地内で過ごすことにしました。でも、愛犬のエネルギーが有り余っていたので、裏庭の小さな森へ連れて行きました。昨日、細い小道を作っておいたので、犬もどこを歩けばいいか分かっているようです。そこには小さな松の木の群れがあり、確実に成長しているように見えます。

裏庭の森で、いちばん背の高い木から「バキッ」という大きな音が聞こえました。山では、冷たい空気のせいで、あちこちから木が軋む音が聞こえてきます。実は、私はこの静けさの中に響く音が、とても好きです。冬ならではの、美しい自然のパーカッションのように感じます。

ブドウのつるは眠っていますが、すでに新しい芽が少し見えています。リンゴの木も、ブルーベリーの木も、みんな眠っているようでいて、静かに成長しています。

裏庭の家庭菜園も、休息中です。雪に覆われた、なめらかな表面がとても好きです。

あっ、これは、主人が昨日木にひとつだけ残っているリンゴを見つけたものです。どうしてこんなふうに残っているのかは分かりません。誰かさん(カラス？）がリンゴを取って、うっかり落としてしまい、枝の間に引っかかったのではないか、と想像しています。
