Digital drawing: love for reading [Esp-Eng]

Para mí, la lectura es de las mejores cosas que puede hacer el ser humano, no solo porque dejamos volar la imaginación, sino también porque ejercitamos nuestro cerebro y lo educamos de una manera genial, porque obviamente la lectura también es un tipo de esparcimiento. Y, felizmente, desde niña pude sentir la lectura como un tipo de refugio y, pensando en esto, les comparto mi dibujo de hoy.

​Suelo buscar inspiración en Pinterest, porque para mí hay de todo en ese lugar; no solamente ideas sobre qué dibujar o ideas sobre qué crear con tus propias manos, sino que también hay instrucción, es decir, que al utilizarla aprendes un poquito más cada día y siento que es de las mejores redes que existen. A veces busco cosas específicas, pero a veces solo veo lo que me sugiere en el inicio; en este caso, sí busqué específicamente ideas sobre dibujos y lectura.

​Conseguí este lindo dibujo hecho de manera digital que me encantó porque tiene un estilo único que parece dibujo tradicional por las líneas libres, no son perfectas, pero aun así el dibujo no deja de ser hermoso. Y aunque me encantó, la verdad es que mi idea siempre es hacer un dibujo más a mi estilo; eso fue lo que hice: tomé la idea principal y luego la adapté un poquito más a mi gusto y estilo.

For me, reading is one of the best things a human being can do, not only because we let our imagination run wild, but also because we exercise our brain and educate it in a great way, because obviously reading is also a type of recreation. And, happily, since I was a child I have been able to feel reading as a kind of refuge, and with this in mind, I share my drawing with you today.

I usually look for inspiration on Pinterest, because for me there is everything there; not only ideas about what to draw or ideas about what to create with your own hands, but there are also instructions, meaning that by using it you learn a little more every day, and I feel that it is one of the best networks that exists. Sometimes I look for specific things, but sometimes I just see what it suggests at the beginning; in this case, I did specifically look for ideas about drawings and reading.

I found this beautiful digital drawing that I loved because it has a unique style that looks like traditional drawing with free lines; they're not perfect, but the drawing is still beautiful. And although I loved it, the truth is that my idea is always to make a drawing more in my style; that's what I did: I took the main idea and then adapted it a little more to my taste and style.

​Para comenzar, yo siempre inicio creando la base del dibujo, en este caso, inicio con lo que podríamos decir que es el esqueleto de la persona. Esto lo aprendí a hacer en clases de dibujo tradicional hace mucho tiempo y facilita que podamos hacer poses en las personas y que estas no queden desproporcionales o raras de ver. Y aunque no he visto mucho que las utilicen en el dibujo digital, la verdad es que yo aprendí a hacerlo así y hasta ahora me ha funcionado.

​Luego de hacer esto, comienzo con el dibujo lineal, esto es básicamente rellenar el "esqueleto" que ya hice, darle grosor al cuerpo y también la forma del mismo. Esto es para luego pasar a la ropa, que suelo hacerla de una vez para saber cuánto espacio ocupa y todo lo demás, así no me complico demasiado al hacer el fondo y eso. En este caso: un libro, un bolso y un refresco. Estos pequeños objetos siempre me toman más tiempo porque requieren más detalle y, por lo general, me quedan un poquito chuecos.

​Ahora, como parte del dibujo lineal, la base del fondo en este caso sería el horizonte junto con algunas montañas y también nubes. Y ahora comienzo la parte que podría decirse que es más "fastidiosita" para mí, porque aún no soy experta ni creo estar cerca de serlo, comienzo a darle color al dibujo. Esta vez decidí pintarlo todo con la misma herramienta, un aerógrafo suave, porque quería que el dibujo quedara con tonos claros y suaves, que pareciera algo así como acuarelas. Spoiler: al final no me quedó como acuarela.

To begin with, I always start by creating the basis of the drawing. In this case, I start with what we could call the skeleton of the person. I learned to do this in traditional drawing classes a long time ago, and it makes it easier to create poses for people without them looking disproportionate or strange. And although I haven't seen it used much in digital drawing, the truth is that I learned to do it this way and it has worked for me so far.

After doing this, I start with the line drawing, which is basically filling in the "skeleton" I already made, giving thickness to the body and also shaping it. This is so that I can then move on to the clothing, which I usually do all at once to see how much space it takes up and everything else, so I don't get too complicated when doing the background and so on. In this case: a book, a bag, and a soda. These small objects always take me longer because they require more detail and usually end up a little crooked.

Now, as part of the line drawing, the base of the background in this case would be the horizon along with some mountains and clouds. And now I begin the part that could be said to be the most "annoying" for me, because I'm not an expert yet, nor do I think I'm close to being one: I begin to add color to the drawing. This time I decided to paint everything with the same tool, a soft airbrush, because I wanted the drawing to have light, soft tones, to look something like watercolors. Spoiler: in the end, it didn't turn out like watercolors.

​Mi siguiente paso fue dar color a la piel, comencé por el rostro y las partes de la piel que no estaban cubiertas por la ropa, como el cuello y las manos. No sé si esto le pase a otras personas que también dibujan, pero dar con un tono específico de piel es todo un reto para mí, hasta ahora no sé cómo hacerlo, así que me voy por colores de piel ya predeterminados en la aplicación, y poco a poco iré aprendiendo a mezclar colores en digital y demás.

​Luego pasé a darle color a la ropa y específicamente les di tonos en azul y algo de verde, así que el suéter fue un tono aguamarina y el pantalón azul. Mi objetivo no era que todo tuviera un tono perfecto y en el que no hubiera partes mal pintadas, sino que quería que el estilo quedara así: tonos suaves, como si se tratara de pinceladas que obviamente nunca quedan del todo perfectas. Y de hecho, por eso usé la opción del aerógrafo, porque si pasas dos veces por el mismo lugar se oscurece y, si el grosor de la herramienta no es tan grande, también quedan zonas sin pintar del todo.

​Luego de la ropa, pasé a darle color al cabello y esto sí lo hice con una herramienta diferente para darle un poquito más de textura, lo hice con un pincel que da la ilusión de pintar pelo a pelo y, para que se viera un poquito más de volumen, utilicé tonos más claros para dar luz y tonos más oscuros para darle sombra al cabello. Aunque todavía mi técnica no es perfecta para hacer el cabello, siento que poco a poco voy mejorando.

My next step was to add color to the skin. I started with the face and the parts of the skin that weren't covered by clothing, such as the neck and hands. I don't know if this happens to other people who also draw, but finding a specific skin tone is quite a challenge for me. So far, I don't know how to do it, so I go for predetermined skin colors in the app, and little by little I will learn to mix colors digitally and so on.

Then I moved on to coloring the clothes, specifically using shades of blue and some green, so the sweater was aquamarine and the pants were blue. My goal wasn't for everything to have a perfect tone and no poorly painted parts, but rather I wanted the style to look like this: soft tones, as if they were brushstrokes that obviously never turn out completely perfect. In fact, that's why I used the airbrush option, because if you go over the same spot twice, it gets darker, and if the tool isn't thick enough, there will also be areas that aren't completely painted.

After the clothes, I moved on to coloring the hair, and I did this with a different tool to give it a little more texture. I used a brush that gives the illusion of painting hair by hair, and to make it look a little more voluminous, I used lighter tones to add light and darker tones to add shadow to the hair. Although my technique for painting hair is not yet perfect, I feel that I am gradually improving.

​Luego comencé a pintar el paisaje e inicié haciéndolo por el suelo que, en este caso, era césped. Pinté primeramente todo el fondo de verde y luego agregué algunos detalles también con el mismo pincel que utilicé para el cabello para que se vieran algunas zonas en las que sobresalía la grama. Luego comencé a pintar los detalles, como quería que hubiera algo de color en el dibujo, decidí utilizar un tono más fuerte en el bolso de la chica y también el mismo tono en los audífonos para que estuviera combinada.

​La parte más fastidiosa, y que casi me hace borrar uno de los objetos del dibujo, fue pintar el refresco; no me salía bien y al final siento que no quedó tampoco tan bien, pero aun así lo dejé. Se supone que, como la botella es transparente, deben verse los colores a través de la misma, y esta fue la parte que más me costó porque siento que debía verse un efecto diferente y no lo logré. Finalmente, terminé pintando las montañas y dándoles sombra con un tono más oscuro, y pasé a darle el azul al cielo.

​Siento que el dibujo quedó muy lindo y me gustó bastante el resultado pese a todos los detalles que tiene. Me esforcé bastante por hacerlo y para mí eso siempre va a contar porque, aun cuando no tenga los resultados específicos que quiero, siempre sirve de práctica y sé que la práctica me hará mejorar. Then I began painting the landscape, starting with the ground, which in this case was grass. First, I painted the entire background green, and then I added some details with the same brush I used for the hair so that some areas where the grass stood out would be visible. Then I started painting the details. Since I wanted some color in the drawing, I decided to use a stronger shade on the girl's bag and also the same shade on the headphones so that they would match.

The most tedious part, which almost made me erase one of the objects in the drawing, was painting the soda. I couldn't get it right, and in the end, I feel like it didn't turn out so well, but I left it anyway. Since the bottle is transparent, you're supposed to be able to see the colors through it, and this was the part that I struggled with the most because I felt like it should have a different effect, and I didn't achieve that. Finally, I finished painting the mountains and shading them with a darker tone, and then I moved on to painting the sky blue.

I feel like the drawing turned out really nice, and I really liked the result despite all the details it has. I put a lot of effort into it, and for me, that will always count because even when I don't get the specific results I want, it always serves as practice, and I know that practice will make me better.
