Campeonato Latinoamericano amateur de golf (SPA-ENG)

Este fin de semana que acaba de finalizar produjo una noticia muy importante para los amantes del golf argentino en particular y de toda Latinoamérica en general, se definió el más importante torneo amateur de la región y por suerte para nosotros, un compatriota lo ganó en una cerrada definición que requirió dos hoyos extra hasta lograr que uno de nuestros representantes se impusiera sobre un aguerrido y excelente golfista venezolano.
El torneo contó con lo más granado del golf amateur latinoamericano, una cita anual que destaca en el calendario y reúne a más de 100 representantes de todos los países del subcontinente. En esta oportunidad, se desarrolló en el excelentemente presentado Lima Golf Club de la ciudad de Lima, Perú.
El torneo se disputa (con una sola interrupción por la pandemia), desde el año 2015 alcanzando con esta 11 ediciones, su importancia radica en el hecho de que el ganador obtiene la invitación para participar de 3 de los 4 torneos mayores del año (Masters de Augusta, US Open y el Abierto Británico), además adquiere la invitación directa para participar del Amateur europeo y del US Amateur, los dos torneos reservados para jugadores aficionados más importantes del mundo del golf actual.
El desarrollo del torneo fue, tal como se preveía, muy disputado, luego de varios días de competencia empataron en el primer lugar con -5 solo 2 de 108 inscriptos: el venezolano Virgilio Paz Valdes y el argentino Mateo Pulcini.
Para que este empate luego de 72 hoyos disputados se conformara, pasaron dos hechos trascendentes en los hoyos 17 y 18 del último día, Pulcini ganaba por un golpe al tee del penúltimo hoyo cuando Paz Valdes embocó un excelente putt y obligando al argentino a embocar uno muy largo desde 6 metros de distancia para llegar empatados al último hoy. En el hoyo 18 el que debió esforzarse desde lejos para embocar su putt y alargar la definición a hoyos extra fue el venezolano.
Así planteada la cuestión fueron nuevamente al hoyo 18 para definir con el método denominado muerte súbita, el que hiciera menos golpes se quedaría con el torneo.
Pulsini, muy nervioso, erró el tiro de salida y su pelota quedó muy cerca de los árboles dentro de un rough alto y denso, como si esta dificultad no fuera poca; algunos árboles le impedían un tiro franco al green. Tuvo suerte ya que no hizo buen contacto con la pelota que no se elevó lo suficiente como para sortear por encima la frondosa arboleda; sin embargo, la bola se las ingenió para pasar sin contratiempos y dejarle un approach bastante sencillo. Paz Valdes por el contrario hizo un excelente tiro de salida aunque su segundo golpe no fue todo lo bueno que hubiera querido y su pelota terminó fuera del green, el argentino embocó un putt muy largo, nuevamente, para asegurarse el par mientras que el approach del venezolano lo dejó a 1 metro, no tuvo inconvenientes en embocar, el empate continuaba.
Nuevamente el hoyo 18 sería el escenario del segundo intento de desempatar, increíblemente el argentino cometió el mismo error de la salida anterior y su pelota quedó en el pasto alto aunque en un sector menos denso, el tiro del venezolano no fue tan bueno como en el primer desempate y su pelota quedó en el pasto alto aunque mucho más cerca del green y con tiro más franco a la bandera.
El segundo golpe del argentino fue casi perfecto dadas las circunstancias y su pelota quedó al borde del green mientras que por su parte Paz Valdes se excedió en la ejecución de su segundo golpe y la pelota se pasó del green yendo a parar a una zanja sin agua y poco profunda con la bandera a la vista, tuvo mucha suerte, estuvo cerca del fuera de límites y tenía tiro franco, sin embargo, su tercer golpe fue un poco más fuerte de lo que hubiera querido y la pelota rodó hasta unos 10 metros del hoyo, Pulsini, por el contrario, hizo un excelente tercer golpe que depositó su pelota a un escaso metro del objetivo.
El venezolano erró el cuarto golpe y recién embocó en el quinto, bogey, el argentino embocó su putt para par y con ello se llevó el torneo. Pasó a ser el ganador de más edad en obtener el triunfo con 25 años y el tercer argentino en lograrlo.
Lo veremos este año en los torneos mayores; será un orgullo para todos nosotros observar a este joven cordobés que jugó brillantemente, por su físico y forma de caminar, me recuerda un poco a Ángel Cabrera, ¿llegará a lo que el Pato logró?
Latin American Amateur Championship
This past weekend brought some very important news for Argentine golf fans in particular, and for all of Latin America in general. The most important amateur tournament in the region concluded, and fortunately for us, a fellow countryman won it in a close finish that required two extra holes before one of our representatives prevailed over a tenacious and excellent Venezuelan golfer.
The tournament featured the cream of Latin American amateur golf, an annual event that stands out on the calendar and brings together more than 100 representatives from all the countries of the subcontinent. This year, it was held at the superbly presented Lima Golf Club in Lima, Peru.
The tournament has been held (with only one interruption due to the pandemic) since 2015, reaching its 11th edition this year. Its importance lies in the fact that the winner receives an invitation to participate in three of the four major tournaments of the year (the Masters Tournament, the U.S. Open, and the British Open), as well as a direct invitation to the European Amateur and the U.S. Amateur, the two most important tournaments for amateur players in the world of golf today.
The competition unfolded, as expected, in a highly contested manner. After several days of play, only two of the 108 entrants tied for first place at -5: Venezuelan Virgilio Paz Valdes and Argentinian Mateo Pulcini.
For this tie to be established after 72 holes, two crucial events occurred on holes 17 and 18 of the final day. Pulsini was leading by one stroke going into the penultimate tee when Paz Valdes sank an excellent putt, forcing the Argentine to sink a very long putt from 6 meters away to reach the final hole tied. On the 18th hole, it was the Venezuelan who had to dig deep to sink his putt and extend the tie to extra holes.
With the tie thus set, they returned to the 18th hole to decide the winner using a sudden-death method; whoever took the fewest strokes would win the tournament.
Pulsini, very nervous, missed his tee shot, and his ball landed very close to the trees in the high, dense rough. As if this weren't difficult enough, some trees blocked his shot to the green. He was lucky, as he didn't make good contact with the ball, which didn't rise high enough to clear the dense foliage. However, the ball managed to clear without incident, leaving him with a fairly easy approach shot. Paz Valdes, on the other hand, hit an excellent tee shot, although his second shot wasn't as good as he would have liked, and his ball ended up off the green. The Argentinian sank a very long putt, again, to secure par, while the Venezuelan's approach shot left him a meter short. He had no trouble sinking it, so for both players, the tie continued.
Once again, the 18th hole would be the scene of the second playoff attempt. Incredibly, the Argentinian made the same mistake as on his previous tee shot, and his ball ended up in the long grass, although in a less dense area. The Venezuelan's shot wasn't as good as in the first playoff, and his ball ended up in the long grass, although much closer to the green and with a clearer shot to the flag.
The Argentine's second shot was almost perfect given the circumstances, and his ball landed on the edge of the green. Paz Valdes, on the other hand, overshot his second shot, and the ball went past the green, landing in a shallow, waterless ditch with the flagstick in sight. He was very lucky; he was close to out of bounds and had a clear shot. However, his third shot was a bit harder than he would have liked, and the ball rolled about 10 meters from the hole. Pulsini, in contrast, made an excellent third shot, placing his ball just a meter from the target.
The Venezuelan missed his fourth shot and only holed out on his fifth, a bogey. The Argentine sank his putt for par, securing the tournament victory. At 25, he became the oldest winner to achieve this feat and the third Argentine to do so.
We'll see him this year in the major tournaments; it will be a source of pride for all of us to watch this young man from Cordoba, who played brilliantly. His physique and gait remind me a bit of Ángel Cabrera. Will he achieve what Pato did?
