During this visit to the tea expo, I noticed a pretty unique booth right at the entrance. It had a great location, and quite a few people were gathered in front of it. Nanhai Tea Ceremony is a hand-shaken tea shop based in central Taiwan that originally started as a traditional tea shop. With that background, the quality of their drinks should be pretty solid. Of course, they offered free tastings. I tried a milk-flavored Jin Xuan tea recommended by the staff. It had a rich, creamy taste, and I really liked it.

One booth even invited a Japanese tea ceremony master to oversee things. The Japanese tea ceremony is an art form that blends philosophy, aesthetics, and a way of life, so you could really feel a strong sense of Japanese style in the booth’s setup. A few staff members only spoke Japanese. It was clear they had been brought over from Japan. I tried their sencha; the flavor was pretty ordinary, but the experience itself was full of emotional value.

A good cup of tea, of course, comes from the quality of the leaves, but without thoughtful packaging, its value is often not fully expressed. I noticed that many tea products had clever packaging designs, not just visually appealing, but often featuring delicate illustrations and fonts, paired with information about the region, the tea plant variety, or even the tea master’s philosophy. Even before opening the package, you could already feel a connection to the tea.

On the other hand, many award-winning tea farms or tea estates seemed more relaxed. They didn’t rush to attract attention with fancy packaging; instead, they let the tea speak for itself. They generously offered tastings, letting people experience the aroma, body, and aftertaste firsthand. One sip of a good tea could instantly dispel any doubts or hesitation. The flavor became the most direct and convincing form of communication.

Both approaches have their merits. Beautiful packaging is like a well-written invitation, drawing people in, while tastings are a sincere, face-to-face way to showcase quality. That’s why wandering through a tea expo is such a meaningful experience. No wonder I feel that visiting a tea expo isn’t just about shopping—it’s a chance to slow down and really savor life.
