What if more girls dreamed of becoming scientists? | [ENG/ESP]

What would the world be like if more girls and women were inspired to study science and technology?

Last Saturday I had the opportunity to attend and exhibit at a fair in my city (La Paz, Bolivia), in honor of the Day of Women and Girls in Science, this fair was held in most cities in my country.

In this event participated several communities, organizations, public and private institutions and some projects, all mostly led by women, with the main objective to encourage more women to be interested in these fields of study and work.

During this experience I realized that sometimes to achieve great changes, we must start with ourselves, from what we can do in our environment.

I was there from the beginning of the fair, where we had to set up our stands and organize ourselves to open it to the public, although the weather did not help the first part of the fair, because the rain was intense, later we were able to enjoy a great experience.

When it was time to open the fair, I could see that there was a great variety of people and organizations that, from their position, were contributing with their grain of sand to this common goal, to inspire girls and women to study and work in science and technology.

I participated with two organizations, both of which were related to blockchain technology, from education on these topics to being part of a nationwide community to generate projects together.

Whenever I participate in this type of event I take many nice experiences, because you can talk one on one with people, meet more people with your same interests and above all share your knowledge and experiences.

This was the case that I was able to talk with several girls and women about all that blockchain technology implies, which not only involves the issue of cryptocurrencies and trading but goes beyond that, as I consider it is something transversal that can be applied to any area.

Although most participants did not know about this technology, I was able to explain a little of what it is and what is the benefit they can get from their positions. It also helped that they knew more about cryptocurrencies because it allowed them to understand with examples the benefits that blockchain can bring to our country.

After finishing my turn inside the stand, I wanted to visit the other places and see how the other exhibitors are working, some that caught my attention were the university projects that were presented, where there were for example robotics, computer science, environmental projects, among others.

Other speakers that caught my attention were a group of cholitas (Bolivian women of indigenous identity with traditional dress) climbers who are famous in my country and who climbed several important mountains not only in Bolivia but also internationally, it was very exciting to hear their inspiring anecdotes.

As you can see each of the exhibitors showed how girls and women are changing the world, from different areas, which has inspired more women to be part of this great movement of change.

The fair was a success, it was completely full, everyone looked very happy and motivated to start working on their own and also to be part of the different communities led by women.

At the end of the event, I felt very inspired and proud of all that we are building as women, and it is clear that if we all support each other we will grow and overcome our limits.

It all starts with us.

¿Y si más niñas soñaran con ser científicas?

¿Cómo sería el mundo si más niñas y mujeres se sintieran inspiradas a estudiar ciencia y tecnología?

El sábado pasado tuve la oportunidad de asistir y exponer en una feria en mi ciudad (La Paz, Bolivia), en honor al Día de la Mujer y Niña en la Ciencia, esta feria se llevó a cabo en la mayoría de ciudades de mi país.

En este evento participaron varias comunidades, organizaciones, instituciones públicas y privadas y algunos proyectos, todos en su mayoría liderado por mujeres, con el principal objetivo que fomentar que más mujeres se interesen en estos campos de estudio y trabajo.

Durante esta experiencia me di cuenta que a veces para llegar a grandes cambios, debemos empezar por uno mismo, desde lo que uno puede hacer en su entorno.

Estuve desde el inicio de la feria, donde nos tocó armar nuestros stands y organizarnos para abrirlo al público, si bien el clima no ayudó la primera parte de la feria, porque la lluvia era intensa, más adelante pudimos disfrutar de una gran experiencia.

A la hora de abrir la feria, pude observar que había una gran variedad de personas y organizaciones que, desde su posición, estaban aportando con su granito de arena a este objetivo en común, inspirar a niñas y mujeres a estudiar y trabajar en ciencia y tecnología.

Yo participé con dos organizaciones, ambas tenían relación con la tecnología blockchain, desde la educación en estos temas hasta ser parte de una comunidad a nivel nacional para generar proyectos en conjunto.

Siempre que participo en este tipo de evento me llevo muchas experiencias bonitas, porque puedes hablar uno a uno con las personas, conocer a más personas con tus mismos intereses y sobre todo compartir tus conocimientos y experiencias.

Este fue el caso que pude conversar con varias niñas y mujeres sobre todo lo que implica la tecnología blockchain, que no solo implica el tema de criptomonedas y trading sino va más allá de eso, ya que considero que es algo transversal que puedes aplicarlo a cualquier área.

Si bien la mayoría de participantes no conocía sobre esta tecnología, pude explicarles un poco de qué es y cuál es el beneficio que pueden obtener desde sus posiciones. Ayudo también que supieran más de las criptomonedas porque permitió que con ejemplos entiendan los beneficios que pueden traer la blockchain a nuestro país.

Luego de haber terminado mi turno dentro del stand, quise visitar los demás lugares y conocer cómo están trabajando los demás expositores, algunos que me llamaron la atención fueron los proyectos universitarios que se presentaron, donde había por ejemplo proyectos de robótica, informática, medioambientales, entre otros.

Otros expositores que me llamaron la atención fueron un grupo de cholitas (mujeres bolivianas de identidad indígena con vestimenta tradicional) escaladoras que son famosas en mi país que escalaron varias montañas importantes no solo de Bolivia sino también a nivel internacional, fue muy emocionante escuchar sus anécdotas inspiradoras.

Como ven cada uno de los expositores mostró como las niñas y mujeres están cambiando el mundo, desde diferentes áreas, lo cual ha inspirado a más mujeres a ser parte de este gran movimiento de cambio.

La feria fue todo un éxito, estuvo totalmente lleno, todos se veían muy felices y motivados por empezar a trabajar en su persona y ser parte también de las distintas comunidades lideradas por mujeres.

Al finalizar el evento, me sentí muy inspirada y orgullosa de todo lo que estamos construyendo como mujeres, y queda claro que si todas nos apoyamos vamos a crecer y superar nuestros límites.
