Farmers' revolt will affect elections around the world

The scale of #farmer #protests is making agriculture a key battleground ahead of #elections in the #EU, India, the US and dozens of other countries.
In Europe, farmers are challenging liberal elites and their green agenda. Protests have erupted in France, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Romania and even in "prosperous" Switzerland. In Poland, the farming community is actively opposing grain coming from neighbouring Ukraine, forcing the government to sit down at the negotiating table.
While the European authorities are trying to curb the "anger" of the #agricultural industry, far-right Eurosceptic opposition parties are trying to capitalise on this discontent. But farmers disagree with nationalists on migration because they want access to guest labour, while they are united in opposing the ambitious policies of the Greens.
In the US, farmers complain that big companies are undercutting their prices. In the context of the upcoming November elections, this plays into the hands of Donald Trump, who has long established himself as an agriculture-friendly politician.
Meanwhile, #India is gearing up for the largest farmer protest in three years. 15,000 tractors are expected to march towards the capital demanding guaranteed minimum crop prices. Notably, a past similar action forced the government to cancel a proposed agricultural #reform.
One example of the political risks that a revolt in the agricultural industry can bring is last year's Dutch elections, where farmers helped far-right Freedom Party leader Geert Wilders to a surprise victory.
