I can still remember the first time I rented Super R-Type on the Super Nintendo; it was the first time I was giving the venerable franchise a shot. I was a HUGE fan of Thunder Force III and similar side scrolling shooters on the Sega Genesis. I enjoyed the game quite a bit, though it was easy, it was a great introduction to the series. Then I heard about R-Type III Third Lightning coming to the Super Nintendo. I put my deposit down, even though there was no real demand for it at the local EB I wanted to be sure I got a copy. Now I am writing a news article about a remake for modern platforms named R-Type Dimensions III and oh boy, this looks amazing.

A Remake Worthy of The Wait

, ININ Games are behind R-Type Dimensions III and are working closely with Irem and Tozai Games. This is great news and likely means we are going to see a very respectful of the source material remake here.

Graphically, R-Type Dimensions III looks phenomenal. I am excited to see this game in action firsthand, seeing the power of modern platforms let loose in a 2D side scrolling shooter is going to be amazing.

Fans will be able to switch graphical styles on the fly, similar to remakes of retro games from a few years ago. Simply fantastic idea that I personally love. Also, audio is getting improved, new scoring options and more.

The Details That Matter

I already spoiled the release date for R-Type Dimensions III earlier. That leaves a few details such as format. There will be digital and physical editions available. You can

. The physical editions will be available in “Special Edition” format and “Collector’s Edition” format.

Special Edition will come with an artbook, protective case, and soundtrack on CD. Price is about $60.

Collector’s Edition buyers will get an exclusive cover and manual, artbook, original and remastered soundtrack on CD, a freaking amazing statue, and an Art Print Bundle featuring an A2 poster, sticker sheet, boss cards, and three replica boxes. Price is around $200.

In a unique move, ININ Games are offering the Special and Collector's Editions to PC players too, you just get a Steam key instead of a physical disc. I wanted to point that out because we don't see that very often.

Are you a fan of 2D side scrolling shooters? Which ones did you rock in your gaming life?

Planned for release on PlayStation 5, Xbox, PC via Steam, and Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 in May 2026.
