Growing up

I always wanted to have this type of curl and I was always jealous when my mother went to the hair dresser to get a perm in her hair. She always told me, we're not going to ruin your hair as you have too beautiful hair and it's bad for you so forget it.

The thing is I had beautiful and very thick hair indeed, it was exceptional thick and often 3x thicker at least than some of the hair of my class mates. It was easy to see the difference between their tiny braid that was super thin compared to my full and thick braid when I was younger. But having such thick hair came with downsides.

It was hot in summer and I can remember all the knots in the bottom of my hair all too well to the point that I refused to let my mother comb my hair and did it myself at an early age because then I could control how hard I'd brush and how much it would hurt, lol.

Turning 17

When I turned 17 my mother finally allowed me to get a perm and I was so excited. I expected these perfect curls as I envisioned them, only to find out the first days were curls that I didn't fancy at all. They were too curly, I wanted the more natural waving curls lol. But having thick and heavy hair came with an advantage this time because it didnt take long for the perm to drop thanks to my heavy hair and be exactly as I hoped it would be.

I believe I only did this twice though, I wanted it for so long but when I had it, the fun was over or something. Came with the age I guess, lol.

Youngest daughter and her natural hair

Although at first it wasn't really curly, for some reason the past year or so we noticed that it became much curlier when it was wet. But she prefers to have her hair in a tail most days because of the weather, it's often too warm to keep it loose as she has heavy and thick hair like me.

I read hormonal changes can do that, change hair, I hope we aren't up for an early puberty, lol.

When tying up her hair, it's always such a nightmare as it will never be perfectly tight as I try to do it, it's frustrating. But yesterday we went to the hair dresser and we got this great tip for curly hair.

I had no clue

As I never read up on it, because usually the curls dissappear once the hair dries (I didn't use any product to "activate" the curls so it's only logic, I guess) the hair is just a bit puffy and I thought her hair just curls when wet.

Until we went to the hair dresser for a hair cut yesterday and she told us when combing it you shouldn't start on top as it breaks the curls and it's beter to start lower and also put up the tail from the bottom up, leaving it a bit messy. She then added some cream and I was amazed by the lovely curls that were left.

Non toxic hair products

I didn't want to buy the cream she had because a little over a year ago we fully weaned off our hair from regular toxic shampoos and I will remain using the hard shampoo blocks for myself although it's a bit difficult for her hair, so I yet have to find a better option for her that remains less toxic and leaves no residue. Therefore I also didn't want to buy the first cream that was advised to me but instead do some internet searching to see what people think of certain prodcuts.

It's important for me not to ruin her hair and scalp with all these leftover products that I had for most of my life as I notice a severe difference in my hair since I weaned off the regular supermarket shampoos.

I expected the curls to drop in a few hours

But yet they stayed surcly all day as you can see here:

What was even more surprising that the next morning, after sleeping with her hair loose instead of in a tail, her hair seemed even more curly and beautiful, you can see the picture I took the next afternoon, about 24 hours after her hair cut:

I'm so surprised and definitely going to do some searching for the best products in the next days because she looks like such a little lady now, it's adorable to see. And although I couldn't have these curls growing up, at least now she has them, and I can admire them, haha.

My hair

A final fun picture of my hair that was cut yesterday:

I always love to cut my hair as short as possible but yet being able to make a tail because I'm not the hair loose type of person when the heat arrives and with the windy being present here so many days of the year, I hate going out and then having messy hair. During winter I love ironing my hair but when summer arrives, wrap it up and be done with it, haha.

Feels so lovely getting rid of that hair!

All pictures above are mine, if you have any curly girl hair tips with natural products, please do leave a message below to help me in the start of my search.

Have a lovely Sunday!
