Gerber Freescape Camp Saw [31-002820]

By: Darrell In Tents

In this video, Darrell reviews and compares two different backpacking bow saws useful for camping - the Gerber Freescape and the Agawa Canyon Boreal 21. Weight-wise, they feel similar, but he notes that the Gerber, which has a 12 inch saw blade, might be a bit heavier. Both saws operate fairly simply; they use standard saw blades and hook easily onto the handle to be ready to use. When it comes to cutting, both saws handle thinner wood well. However, he illustrates that when dealing with larger, around two-inch diameter wood, the Boreal’s longer, 21 inch blade proves to be an advantage.

Overall, both saws prove to be great tools for camping and backpacking. However, Darrell mentions that if he had to pick only one, he would choose the Boreal 21 due to its longer blade which provides a wider range of cutting capabilities. The Boreal 21 may be a little longer and costlier than the Gerber Freescape, but it does not feel significantly heavier and functions more efficiently. Ultimately, the choice between the two depends on user preferences concerning bulk, blade length, and weight.
