In today’s busy world, the easiest way for many parents to keep a child calm is to hand them a smartphone. From feeding time to finishing household chores, that small screen seems to be the solution to everything. However, from a scientific perspective, this temporary peace may come at the cost of irreversible damage to a child’s brain.

Modern research shows that excessive phone use can cause structural changes in a part of the child’s brain known as white matter. This area is crucial for language learning, attention, and emotional development, all of which can be disrupted by screen addiction. Medical science also indicates that the blue light emitted from smartphone screens interferes with the production of melatonin, a hormone essential for sleep. As a result, children may suffer from long-term insomnia and increased irritability.

To protect your child from this alarming situation, the first step is to establish a clear digital routine. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, children under 18 to 24 months of age should not be exposed to screens at all. Even for older children, more than one hour of screen time per day can be risky.

To keep children away from phone addiction, offer them creative toys, drawing and coloring materials, or colorful storybooks instead. Rather than keeping them confined indoors in the afternoon, take them to parks or open spaces where they can interact with other children and engage in physical activity. Remember, children learn by imitation—so reduce your own phone use in front of them and spend quality time together.
