Mexican Murals - Botanics in Tacubaya [CCC's Street Art Contest #224]

Tacubaya is a zoo! It's really not, but that's the impression many of my visitor expressed, albeit with comparisons to a casino, a circus, a theater, or a brothel, depending on their cultural background. After all, it's a place where three metro lines converge underground, as well as the metrobus and various bus lines above ground. Such a busy transit hub naturally attracts food stands and market stalls both under and above the surface, making the surrounding area look like a market - and that doesn't even take the actual market in account... or the other one! So your guess may be correct if you expect a good amount of trash, dirt, and squalor in midst all that chaos, so much so that a beautiful image may come entirely surprising.

A Visually Impressive Overpass

On the side of an unassuming pedestrian overpass, I saw this fantastic mural appear. It features a man and a woman, both wearing traditional Mexican attire, surrounded by native desert flora, such as tall cacti and agave plants. It seems like the painting has just been finished, judging from the palm tree that still has its branches wrapped to provide better access to the wall.

I was quite happy to see this rather unseemly overpass turned into such a beautiful work of art. I don't know how long it will remain undisturbed, given the fact that it's out where anyone can access it simply, in a place like Tacubaya. Still, I am happy that such a beautification effort has been taken. I am not sure about the artists themselves, but it is clear that this work must have been commissioned by the ones in charge. Very well done!
