Pocket Silver: Libertad Round

Keeping an interesting coin as a "pocket piece," to have with you and show off to others, has a long tradition. President Theodore Roosevelt, for one, reportedly carried with him an ancient Greek Owl tetradrachm, a classically beautiful piece of coin art nearly 2,500 years old. It was one of the inspirations that led him to order a redesign of our nation's coinage at the beginning of the 20th century.

This is one of the first-year issues of 1982 Mexico Libertad coins that I have. I stack these coins. I have not completed the tube yet, as they are too pricey. But I'm always on the lookout for a good price.

I'd love to carry this coin as my EDC (Every Day Carry), but I value the coin too much, I'm afraid to damage it or misplace it.

Looking at a coin is one thing, but actually touching it adds a whole new level of enjoyment. But as I said earlier, I'd rather not hold it because it's BU (Brilliant Uncirculated).

However, the round below 👇 is likewise very pretty, and I don't mind fidgeting with it. I could use it as a pocket piece:

Some people say you shouldn’t mention a coin you’re carrying because it might draw attention, but that feels inconsistent. Plenty of us wear expensive jewelry out in the open every day, and there isn’t a sudden spike in people getting robbed for it.

Both the coin and the round are beautiful, but I value the coin more than the round. There is no contest!

I am more concerned about the damage to the coin. An uncirculated coin won’t stay uncirculated for long in your pocket, and high‑grade circulated pieces can pick up fingerprints and other issues fast. It’s better to carry lower‑grade coins.

Such a great idea @fat-elvis!
