Gambling From The Perspective Of An Addict

Hi guys,
I will need to come up with a better way of introducing my blog to you guys. Thus “hi guys” feels like I am doing a vlog or something lol. Anyways.
Gambling has been a hot topic ever since I was of age. For some reason we have a hot debate on gambling in my country for years now and it doesn’t seem to ever end. Just last year the government in a move to deter the youth from engaging in betting decided to tax bet winnings.
They claimed it was not good for the youth to be engaged in betting. But one thing that I found amazing along the way is that the same government who signed off on tax bet winnings to deter the youth from betting was the same government who was stalling on signing an anti LGBTQ+ law in the country.
We all have our opinions on a topic like this but if they claimed our scriptures were against betting and decided to tax it why didn’t they follow the same vein and sign the bill?
I’ll first of all give my personal experience with gambling even before I say what I think about gambling.
Back at SHS I managed to convince myself that the only way I could make extra money was through betting. Back then I was one of the advocates against betting and I seemed to be against it most of the time. Now imagine what my peers would have said if they found out I was betting as well. I hid it from there.
The first time I placed a bet I was so clueless. In a bid to understand how it works I choose a single team and placed the bet. After preps I checked on my beltway account and I had won. I was happy and since it was my first time it was an over happiness for me.
Through my senior high school days I did win sometimes even though I lost at times as well. Fast forward to the university I met new friends so I made them aware I was in the game as well. Bet was my breakfast, launch and super. It started like a joke cause I said I was only bet when the 5 main leagues are in play but then I found myself even betting when there were no games in the top 5 leagues available. It went on for a while and I can boldly say the number of times I won a bet at the university wouldn’t be up to 50 but then I placed a bet everyday.

From becoming fan it became addictive even before I could knew it. The day I realised I was addicted was when I had my last 20 cedis( which is 1. Something dollars now) and all I was thinking of was how to 2x this money. I ended up putting it in a nations league game and ended up loosing it.
When it finally hit me I had realised that I was loosing more money than I was winning. The crypto cane at the perfect time. I always said I was betting cause I didn’t have alternative ways of making money so when crypto came it took me a while but I was able to stop betting.
I can proudly say it’s been over 2 to 3 years now and I haven’t placed a single bet. I still have my accounts but I don’t bet anymore. Sometimes I reflect on how hard it was for me to stop and then finally I don’t even have the energy to bet.
I agree that betting has made some people lots of money. On a personal point of view betting is bad cause it’s really addictive but it can’t be banned. We are all adults and we have the right sense to think for ourselves. We know how bad betting can be but if we choose to gamble our life earnings away then so be it. It has caused a lot of people pain but it is what it is.
Most people betting now would have wished they didn’t start in the first place but to others betting is their saviour so it depends on where you’re sitting.
