Drachenburg Castle, Königswinter - Germany

Hello everyone! My family and I set out to visit Drachenburg Castle last week. The castle is situated on the Drachenfels hills near the town of Konigswinter, close to Bonn. This place is like a fairy tale castle, both its surroundings and the castle itself are truly extraordinary. It's nestled in a fantastic location amidst nature. We were very impressed. If you find yourself in the Bonn or Cologne area you must definitely visit Drachenburg Castle. The castle offers a beautiful view of the the Rhine River. The scenery is magnificent.

Drachenburg Castle is a wonderful spot for photographers. There are numerous beauties to be seen, enjoyed and captured. After driving to a certain point and parking your car you can reach the castle with a 15-minute light uphill walk. You can also take a nostalgic train operated by a crane from the town to the castle. We took the train with the children and chose to walk ourselves. Despite the slight tiredness we concluded at the end of the day that our choice was right. The only challenge was the uphill climb. We had to progress slowly and the weather was hot because the temperature was around 30 degrees.

We inquired about where to buy tickets. The tickets are quite affordable 8 Euros for adults. There are benches scattered around the castle so you can enjoy the view. We were pleased that we walked up. As we ascended the view became even more stunning. Along the way there are mini cafes where you can sit, as well ashave a drink. If you're willing to take on the fatigue and choose to walk, you can also have the opportunity to explore the natural beauty blended with the charms of traditional German architecture.

We reached the castle after a 15 minute walk. We met up with my mother and the children there and initiated our tour of the castle.

According to the information plaques the castle was built in 1882 by Duke Georg von Sachsen-Meiningen. Later in 1904, it was used as a hotel. It suffered Allied bombing during World War II and was restored in 1947. In 1986 it was designated as a protected monument.

The details of the interior and exterior architecture of the castle can be examined for hours. What impressed me the most were the windows and each opening to a different view. Every courtyard and observation terrace had a unique beauty.

The castle featured images of individuals who lived in different periods and often held significant places in German literature and music history. Johann Sebastian Bach, Christoph Willibald Gluck, Beethoven, Mozart... They all lived interesting lives and their works were very beautiful.

The view from the castle's balcony was impressive. The sight of the Rhine River was magnificent. Another castle was visible, and it was currently serving as a hotel.

The castle took about an hour of our time. Slowly wandering through we could imagine the people who lived here and their eras.

We had a wonderful day overlooking the Rhine Valley and the Siebengebirge region from above.
