Castle of Cheese also called Forte de São Francisco Xavier is a small, historic fort with beautiful views of the Atlantic.
Fort of São Francisco Xavier, this fortress sits along Porto coastline, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and offering a blend of history and stunning views. When I arrived that morning, the sky was blanketed with clouds, giving the day an almost mystical quality. It was one of those overcast autumn days where the air is thick.

Forte de São Francisco Xavier, esta fortaleza fica ao longo da costa do Porto, com vista para o Oceano Atlântico e oferece uma mistura de história e vistas deslumbrantes. Quando cheguei, nesta manhã, o céu estava coberto de nuvens, conferindo ao dia uma qualidade quase mística. Estava um daqueles dias nublados de Outono em que o ar é denso.
Even with the clouds hanging low, the temperature was pleasantly mild, a reminder of autumn gentle touch in Porto. The light was soft and diffused, casting a calm glow over everything around me, from the fortress walls to the sand on the nearby beach. I could feel the peacefulness of the morning settle in as I began my exploration of Castle of Cheese.

Mesmo com as nuvens baixas, a temperatura estava agradavelmente amena, uma lembrança do toque suave do outono no Porto. A luz era suave e difusa, lançando um brilho calmo sobre tudo o que me rodeava, desde as muralhas da fortaleza até à areia da praia ali perto. Consegui sentir a tranquilidade da manhã a instalar-se quando comecei a explorar o Castelo do Queijo.
Approaching the fortress, I felt transported back in time. Its solid stone walls, weathered from centuries of facing the Atlantic winds, stand as a testament to Porto past. Castle of Cheese once served as a defense against sea invasions. The architecture is rugged and simple, with thick walls and rounded corners designed for endurance. It's easy to see why this place was chosen to protect the coastline, the view from the top of the fortress provides a sweeping panorama of the ocean, making it a strategic spot for spotting incoming ships.

Ao aproximar-me da fortaleza, senti-me transportado para trás no tempo. As suas sólidas paredes de pedra, desgastadas por séculos de resistência aos ventos do Atlântico, são um testemunho do passado do Porto. O Castelo do Queijo já serviu de defesa contra as invasões marítimas. A arquitetura é robusta e simples, com paredes grossas e cantos arredondados concebidos para serem resistentes. É fácil perceber porque é que este local foi escolhido para proteger a costa, a vista do topo da fortaleza proporciona um panorama abrangente do oceano, tornando-a um local estratégico para avistar navios que chegam.
The sea stretched endlessly before me, with gentle waves rolling in under the overcast sky. Even without the usual blue skies, the scene was mesmerizing. The water seemed to merge with the sky in the distance. The only sound was the steady rhythm of the waves crashing against the rocks below.

After soaking in the sea view, I wandered down to Praia do Castelo do Queijo, the small beach nestled right next to the fortress. The beach was deserted at this early hour, with just a few seabirds skimming over the waves. The soft breeze carried the fresh scent of the sea. The muted light and the gentle waves made the beach feel like a hidden oasis.

Depois de apreciar a vista para o mar, desci até à Praia do Castelo do Queijo, a pequena praia situada mesmo ao lado da fortaleza. A praia estava deserta àquela hora da manhã, com apenas algumas aves marinhas a sobrevoar as ondas. A brisa suave transportava o aroma fresco do mar. A luz suave e as ondas suaves faziam com que a praia parecesse um oásis escondido.
The history of Castle of Cheese and its surrounding beach is woven into the landscape itself. From fishermen and traders to soldiers and travelers, each visitor has added a layer of memory to this place.

Theres a certain awe that comes from touching something that has stood in place for hundreds of years, enduring the elements and watching history unfold.

Looking back toward Castle of Cheese Beach, I could see the gentle curve of the shore. The beach, with its natural rock formations and soft sands, felt like an extension of the fortress itself. It was a blend of nature and history, where the land meets the sea in a seamless embrace.
