Praia Fluvial de Unhais da Serra 📍Castelo Branco 🇵🇹 [Eng][Esp]

Summer, although many say it is coming to an end, continues to hit hard in southern Europe, enough to keep looking for places where we can escape the high temperatures, even for a while.

Before resuming the routines that come with the return of school activities, one tries to take advantage of any getaway to enjoy the sun without having to swelter.

That's where the rivers, bathing areas or "fluvial beaches", as I have just discovered that some streams in Portugal are called, come into play, where people can come for free to spend some time diving in a clean and safe space.

A brief visit to Unhais da Serra was enough to recharge our batteries and refresh ourselves in the icy waters of the stream, which have been channeled through the middle of the village, so that the public can enjoy it.

Upon arrival, the first thing you see at the entrance of the village is a huge structure that belongs to a hot springs spa, something that many people come to this point for, although our goal was nothing so sophisticated. As we went further in, we advanced through its steep streets to a large parking lot for visitors to the park and river beaches.

  > El verano, aunque muchos digan que está llegando a su final, sigue golpeando fuerte en el sur de Europa, lo suficiente para seguir buscando lugares en donde podamos escapar de las altas temperaturas, aunque sea por un rato.
Antes de retomar las rutinas que llegan con el regreso de las actividades escolares, uno intenta aprovechar cualquier escapada para disfrutar del sol sin tener que sofocarse.
Ahí es donde entran en juego los ríos, balnearios o *playas fluviales*, como acabo de descubrir que les llaman a algunos arroyos en Portugal, estos en donde la gente puede acercarse gratuitamente a pasar un rato zambulléndose en un espacio limpio y seguro.
Una breve visita a **Unhais da Serra** fue suficiente para recargar energías y refrescarnos en las heladas aguas del arroyo, que han canalizado a su paso por medio del pueblo, para que el público pueda disfrutarlo.
Al llegar, lo primero que se divisa a la entrada del pueblo es una enorme estructura que pertenece a un spa de aguas termales, es algo por lo que muchas personas vienen a este punto, aunque nuestro objetivo no era nada tan sofisticado. Al adentrarnos más, avanzamos por sus calles empinadas hasta un amplio parking dispuesto para los visitantes del parque y las playas fluviales.

 

The extension is quite wide, with plenty of lawn space and umbrellas arranged to provide shade to visitors. There are signs at the entrance informing of different trekking routes for those interested and of the rules for enjoying the swimming area.

At first glance you can see that on the other side of the area set aside for leisure, separated by the river, there are private homes, some with cows and lambs in their yard and yet there is no sign of dirt, it seems that in general everyone cooperates to keep the place as pleasant as possible.

The area for public enjoyment is signposted on the ground with the depth, so that one is aware in which part can be safer, ranging from one meter deep, increasing in length up to 2.20 meters. There is also a lifeguard attentive to the needs of visitors, although everything seems too quiet for him to have too much work or maybe it's because we came during the week, in the morning and there was little affluence.

  > La extensión es bastante amplia, con mucho espacio de césped y sombrillas dispuestas para dar sombra a los visitantes. Hay carteles en la entrada que informan de distintas rutas de trekking para los interesados y de las normas para disfrutar del balneario.
En un primer vistazo se puede observar que al otro lado de la zona dispuesta para el ocio, separada por el río, hay viviendas particulares, algunas con vacas y corderos en su patio y, sin embargo, no hay ningún signo de suciedad, parece que en general todos colaboran para mantener el lugar lo más ameno posible.
La zona para el disfrute público está señalizada en el suelo con la profundidad, para que uno sea consciente en qué parte puede estar más seguro, va desde el metro de profundidad, aumentando a lo largo hasta los 2.20 metros. También está un socorrista atento a las necesidades de los visitantes, aunque todo parece muy tranquilo como para que duela tener demasiado trabajo o puede que sea porque vinimos entre semana, por la mañana y había poca afluencia.

There is a cafe inside the complex, with bathrooms outside for the public of the complex, which is important to note how well kept they are.

The Bar da Prainha offers snacks, drinks for everyone and also meals for lunch. There is ample space on the terrace from which you can enjoy the scenery of the River while you eat and they have a very friendly and attentive team of waiters, always with a smile.

Lunch time in Portugal is quite early, at 12:00 we sat down, as we had not had breakfast, and started to order our food. Besides the pizzas and hamburgers which is what people order most when they are in that place, they have some typical Portuguese dishes which is what I was really interested in ordering.

I won't go into too much detail, but the Bifana, pork sandwich with mustard, and the Moelas, chicken gizzards, were very good accompanied by a Sagres beer from the country and the typical olives that are never missing.

As we ate the place started to fill up, apparently the locals come to eat and then stay and enjoy the bathing spot.

El **Bar da Prainha** ofrece snacks, bebidas para todos los públicos y además comidas para el momento de almorzar. Hay un amplio espacio en la terraza desde la que se puede disfrutar del paisaje del Río mientras se cono y cuentan con un equipo de camareros muy amable y atento, siempre con una sonrisa.
La hora de la comida en Portugal es bastante temprana, a las 12:00 nos sentamos, pues no habíamos desayunado, y comenzamos a pedir nuestra comida. Además de las pizzas y hamburguesas que es lo que pide más la gente cuando está en ese lugar, tienen algunos platos típicos portugueses que es lo que a mi realmente me interesaba pedir.
No voy a entrar en demasiado detalle, pero la *Bifana*, sándwich de cerdo con mostaza, y las *Moelas*, mollejas de pollo, estaban muy buenas acompañadas de una cerveza *Sagres* del país y las aceitunas típicas que nunca faltan.
Mientras miamos el lugar comenzó a llenarse, al parecer la gente local se acerca a comer y luego se queda disfrutando del balneario.

After lunch, lying on the grass for a while before returning to the water is a total luxury. More people started to arrive, but they would only dive into the water for a moment, to cool off I guess, and then lie down to sunbathe or read in the shade. Some kids were running around and jumping off the diving boards, but they didn't stay too long in the water either.

The truth is that the water was too cold despite the hot weather, once inside, although you felt like you were acclimatizing to the cold, you started to get rather numb and stopped feeling mobile hahaha I don't think it was cold to an unbearable level, but there was a reason people didn't stay inside all day.

The stream flows from the Serra da Estrela, the highest mountain complex in the area, so it's quite logical that the temperatures would be such. When passing through populated areas what they do is to improvise a kind of "natural" pool for people to enjoy the river as it flows by, this is what they call "fluvial beaches".

  > Luego de comer, recostarse sobre la grama un rato antes de volver al agua, es un lujo total. Comenzó a llegar más gente, pero se zambullían solo un momento en el agua, para refrescarse me imagino y luego se echaban a tomar el sol o a leer en la sombra. Algunos niños correteaban y saltaban de los trampolines, pero tampoco se quedaban demasiado tiempo en el agua.
Lo cierto es que el agua estaba demasiado fría a pesar del calor que hacía, una vez dentro, aunque sentías que te aclimatabas al frío, comenzabas más bien a entumecerme y dejar de sentir movilidad jajaja no creo que estuviese fría a un nivel insoportable, pero por algo las personas no se quedaban dentro todo el día.
El arroyo fluye de la *Serra da Estrela*, el complejo montañoso más alto de la zona, por lo que es bastante lógico que las temperaturas sean tales. Al pasar por zonas pobladas lo que hacen es improvisar una especie de piscina “natural” para que la gente disfrute del Río a su paso, esto es lo que llaman *playas fluviales*.

In this case, they have created a long "pool" that begins with the fall of the stream in the form of a small waterfall, and ends with a wall that they have placed to increase the water level in the water pool. At the bottom they have fixed many rocks, probably to make it look more natural, although this makes the area very slippery because of the moss that has formed around the rocks.

There are lots of little super small fishes running around the area and, as dangerous as it may sound, the occasional snake dancing around. We only saw one that quickly hid among the rocks, but if we only saw it on one visit, I imagine it is common and not considered a danger. I was curious to ask the lifeguard, but I was entertained and forgot.

At the end of the construction that they have done to increase the depth, there is a bridge where you can go to both sides of the river beach where there are stairs all along to go down to the water.

After that bridge, you can see that the creek resumes its path naturally, with a gentle current through the undergrowth, until it disappears from sight.

  > En este caso, han creado una larga “piscina” que comienza con la caída del arroyo con forma de pequeña cascada, y termina con una pared que han puesto para aumentar el nivel del agua en el balneario. En el fondo han fijado muchas rocas, probablemente para que parezca más natural, aunque esto hace que la zona sea muy resbalosa por el musgo que se ha formado alrededor de las rocas.
Hay muchos pecesitos súper pequeños recorriendo la zona y, por más peligroso que pueda sonar, alguna que otra serpiente danzando por allí. Solo vimos una que se escondió entre las piedras rápidamente, pero si con una única visita la vimos, imagino que es algo común y que no se considera ningún peligro. Tenía curiosidad de consultarle al socorrista, pero estaba entretenida y se me olvidó.
Al final de la construcción que han hecho para aumentar la profundidad, hay un puente en donde se puede pasar a ambos lados de la playa fluvial en donde hay apostadas escaleras a todo lo largo para bajar al agua.
Después de ese puente, se puede ver que el arroyo retoma su camino de forma natural, con una corriente suave entre la maleza, hasta perderse de vista.
