When I was growing up Canberra had a reputation of being a boring place, the Australian bush capital. Either I have grown up to be boring or it has got way better. I suppose it is a bit of both, either way I really enjoy every time we get to visit.
The Nation botanic Gardens, had a different areas dedicated to each of the states of Australia, free entry but paid parking.

Dairy Farmer Hill lookout named after the cows that used to be in the area. probably the best lookout on Canberra and its surrounds. The lookout, Amillary Sphere Sundial and Eagles nest sculpture are all within the grounds of the National Arboretum.
