My husband had a hankering for crab cakes so he put 3 crab traps back in the river. When I was taking care of the traps I started putting 3 zip ties on each trap, one in the middle and one about 4 inches from the corner of the doorway, because someone was running my traps and stealing the crabs. So when my husband put them back over he told me that one zip tie in the middle will keep them from taking the crabs, I told him that I bet that they will pull the corner apart and take the crabs.
Today he ran the traps and I will give you one guess as to what they did. I bet you guessed it. He said that the traps were unlatched and the corners were pulled apart. He hates it when I am right. I also had told him that the trap that was put in front of all of the houses, they do not run. I think it is because they can be seen. They did not run it, it had 4 crabs, the other 2, one had one and the other had 2. So he did get enough to make crab cakes for us to eat for dinner tonight.

This was the biggest one, it was 18 inches, with its claws stretched out.
Years ago I took my oldest sister and her husband up the creek fishing for their anniversary. My brother-in-law caught a crab and when he tried to grab it I told him no don't do that. He says I'll be fine and grabbed the crab. Big mistake, it latched onto his thumb. He squealed like a stuck pig. He had never done much saltwater fishing and did not think that a crab could hurt like that. He sat there for quite some time holding onto the other pincher and the crab's body. I tried to get him to let me smash it but he thought I would hit his hand or something like that. When he finally got it to let go, he had no problem hitting it with the club. He did not mess with any more crabs.
Years ago we were duck hunting in the mosquito impoundments and saw big crabs in them. You could not get to them by boat so we anchored our boat and carried a fish box and a dipnet to the impoundments. We filled the entire box with the biggest crabs that we had ever seen. With their claws stretched out, some were 24 inches. We threw a party and boiled them, everyone was amazed at how big they were. They were also very tasty.
