I want to share what happened to me recently, to see if it's happened to you too, and also to help prevent it from happening to you. I usually go to bed late, and last night while I was relaxing watching a series on Netflix, I suddenly started feeling strange. Specifically, I felt something odd about my upper lip; I noticed some unusual swelling. So I ran to the bathroom to see what was going on, and sure enough, I saw some swelling. It wasn't too significant, it was rather mild. However, even though I was puzzled, that wasn't what alarmed me. It was the astonishing speed with which the swelling increased. Seriously, in a matter of minutes (maybe five or ten), I started noticing that my upper lip was growing bigger and bigger. So when I went to the bathroom to look in the mirror, I discovered it looked like this 😲:

Quiero compartir lo que me sucedió recientemente, para saber si también les ha ocurrido y también para evitar que les suceda. Y es que yo suelo acostarme tarde y ayer en la noche mientras me relajaba viendo una serie en Netflix, de pronto comencé a sentirme extraña, específicamente sentí algo extraño en mi labio superior, noté cierto volumen extraño, así que corrí al baño para ver que sucedía y en efecto vi cierta inflamación, no demasiado importante, era más bien leve, sin embargo, a pesar de que yo estaba desconcertada, eso no fue lo que me alarmó, sino la asombrosa rapidez con la que la inflamación se incrementó, en serio, en cuestión de minutos (Tal vez unos cinco o diez) comencé a notar que mi labio superior crecía más y más, así que cuando fui al baño a verme en el espejo descubrí que se veía de esta manera 😲:

I didn't know what to do, so as dawn broke, I thought I'd look for a solution online, or at least an answer to what was happening to me. (Obviously, I'm not saying the internet is a definitive solution or that it should replace a doctor's opinion, but it's what I had available at the time.) So, after describing my symptoms and doing some research, I discovered that maybe, just maybe, it could be labial angioedema, which is a rapid and deep swelling of the tissues in the lips. 😖 This can happen due to several factors: heredity, adverse reactions to medications, blows, minor injuries, or allergies. Then I started thinking carefully, ruling out each of the causes... I didn't think it was an allergic reaction, since thank God I wasn't having trouble breathing, and it hadn't been a blow either, but...

Yo no sabía que hacer, así que mientras amanecía pensé fue en buscar alguna solución por internet o al menos una respuesta a lo que me estaba ocurriendo (Obviamente no estoy diciendo que internet sea una solución definitiva ni que deba suplantar la opinión de un médico, pero es lo que yo tenía a la mano en ese momento), por lo tanto al describir mis síntomas e investigar un poco, descubrí que tal vez, solo TAL VEZ podría tratarse de un angioedema labial, lo cuál es una inflamación rápida y profunda de los tejidos en los labios 😖, esto puede suceder por varios factores: hereditarios, reacciones adversas a medicamentos, golpes, pequeñas heridas o alergias, entonces comencé a pensar detenidamente descartando cada una de las causas... No creía que fuese una reacción alérgica, ya que gracias a Dios no tenía dificultades para respirar, tampoco había sido un golpe, pero...

I must admit I have a bad habit that's hard to break: I can't stand seeing flakes or dead skin on my lips. This happens even though I drink enough water and use moisturizing lip balms. So, when I see a flake, sometimes consciously and other times, like last night, unconsciously, I start trying to remove it. However, I now clearly remember that while I was doing this, I hurt myself a little. It was barely noticeable, but since I felt a slight pain, I stopped immediately. However, a few seconds later, this happened 😨 😱 and it's something that had never happened to me before.

Debo reconocer que tengo un mal hábito del que me cuesta deshacerme, y es que no soporto ver pellejitos o piel muerta en mis labios, y esto ocurre a pesar de que bebo suficiente agua y uso labiales hidratantes, así que cuando me veo algún pellejito, a veces de forma consciente y en otras como anoche, de forma inconsciente, comienzo a tratar de quitarlos, sin embargo ahora recuerdo con claridad que mientras lo hacía me lastimé un poco, apenas y fue una herida imperceptible, pero como sentí un ligero dolor paré enseguida, sin embargo pocos segundos después ocurrió esto 😨 😱 y es algo que no me había ocurrido antes.

This morning I was even more alarmed to see that not just part of my upper lip, but the whole thing was completely swollen 😲 😰, so I started taking pictures to send to my cousin who is a doctor, since I wanted her opinion, and she told me that the cause had indeed been that small wound, which perhaps had been deeper than could be perceived, and that was what caused the labial angioedema, so in this case my hypothesis based on the information I found on the internet was correct, so she only asked me to use cold compresses, preferably with ice on the affected area, since ice greatly reduces swelling.

Esta mañana me alarmé aún más al ver que no solo una parte de mi labio superior, sino toda estaba completamente inflamada 😲 😰, así que comencé a tomar fotografías para enviárselas a mi prima que es médico, ya que yo quería su opinión, y ella me dijo que en efecto la causa había sido esa pequeña herida, que tal vez había sido más profunda de lo que se podía percibir, y fue lo que ocasionó el angioedema labial, así que en este caso mi hipótesis basada en la información que encontré en internet era acertada, así que solo me pidió que usara compresas frías, de preferencia con hielo sobre la zona afectada, ya que el hielo reduce mucho las inflamaciones.

And so I've been doing this all day, putting on cold compresses. Sometimes I wrap an ice cube in a clean cloth to prevent the excessive cold from burning my skin, and other times I put on a cotton ball soaked in an iced infusion of Plantago major or "Llantén" as we usually call it (this is an herb that has anti-inflammatory properties).

Y pues así he estado todo el día, poniéndome compresas frías, en ocasiones envuelvo un hielo en un lienzo limpio para evitar que el frío excesivo queme mi piel, y en otras ocasiones me pongo un algodón empapado en una infusión helada de Llantén (una hierba que tiene propiedades antiinflamatoria)

The moral of the story is that we need to be responsible with our bodies, break bad habits like biting our nails, or in my case, pick at the skin around my lips. This is a delicate area, very delicate, so we have to be careful. Fortunately, the swelling has gone down quite a bit throughout the day 🤗, and I hope that by tomorrow I'll be much better, God willing. But for now, I'll say goodbye, not without first thanking you for allowing me to share my experience with you 😊.

La moraleja de todo esto es que debemos ser responsables con nuestro cuerpo, dejar los malos hábitos como morderse las uñas o en mi caso, deshacerme de los pellejitos de los labios, esta es una zona delicada, muy delicada, así que hay que ser cuidadosos. Afortunadamente la inflamación ha cedido ya bastante en el transcurso del día 🤗, y espero que ya para mañana yo esté bastante recuperada, Dios mediante. Pero por ahora me despido, no sin antes agradecerles por permitirme compartir con ustedes mi experiencia 😊.
