Good morning Tuesday, Hive Book friends, I hope you are doing very well. I for my part, I do not forget that I had promised a beautiful and varied list of books to read and share, but things happened, they always happen like that. Between other readings and activities, starting a course and life itself, the last book I was reading, was abandoned. The cause was simple, it had two chapters in a row that were not interesting at all, and I was simply getting tired of it. But not only that, after a while without reading, I like to get back into the habit with some “light reading” ready for enjoyment.

Buen día martes, amigos de Hive Book, espero que se encuentren muy bien. Yo por mi parte, no me olvido que había prometido una bella y variada lista de libros que leer y compartir, pero pasaron cosas, siempre suceden así. Entre otras lecturas y actividades, empezar un curso y la vida misma, el último libro que estaba leyendo, fue abandonado. La causa fue simple, tuvo dos capítulos seguidos que no fueron nada interesantes, y me fue cansando simplemente. Pero no solo eso, luego de un tiempo sin leer, me gusta retomar el hábito con cierta “lectura liviana” lista para el disfrute.

Not that this is exactly the case, but this graphic novel was very agile to read, with its historical and emotional charge included. I felt very passionate and current the subject it deals with, and it seems ideal to resume my reading habit and tell you what happened to me here. It's not the first graphic novel I've read, but it's the one I've been in love with for years. Although it wasn't until recently that I was able to have my personal edition to turn to when I feel like it and I'm curious. That's why I bring you today a summary and an emotional touch that Art Spiegelman has to offer us with his work, touching and deep for its format, full of emotional sequels, or traumas transmitted between generations, and the most remarkable thing is that Art romanticizes neither his father, nor his relationship with him, nor skimps on the most gory details of the time... here we go!

Tampoco es que sea puntualmente el caso, pero esta novela gráfica se me hizo muy ágil de leer, con su carga histórica y emocional incluída. Sentí muy apasionante y vigente el tema que trata, y me parece ideal retomar mi hábito de lectura y contarles qué me pasó aquí. No es la primera novela gráfica que leo, pero si la que me ha enamorado desde hace años. Aunque no fue hasta hace poco que pude tener mi edición personal donde recurrir cuando sienta ganas y curiosidad. Por eso les traigo hoy un resumen y un toque emocional que tiene para ofrecernos Art Spiegelman con su obra, conmovedora y profunda para su formato, llena de secuelas emocionales, o traumas transmitidos entre generaciones, y lo más destacable es que Art no romantiza ni a su padre, ni su relación con él, ni escatima en los detalles más cruentos de la época… allí vamos!

The first detail to tell you is clear, we find the title “Maus” which was not translated from German, it keeps that name, at least for Spanish. Then, I continue, for those who know absolutely nothing about this work, it is a graphic novel about the Holocaust, where the artist transports us to “Mauschwitz” with a clear allusion, and the story is based on the experiences of his father, so it will not only be emotional because of the historical event, but also portrays certain difficulties in the relationship.

El primer detalle que contarles es claro, nos encontramos con el título “Maus” que no fue traducido del alemán, conserva ese nombre, al menos para el castellano. Luego, continúo, para quienes no saben absolutamente nada de esta obra, es una novela gráfica acerca del Holocausto, donde el artista nos transporta a “Mauschwitz” con una clara alusión, y la historia está basada en las vivencias de su padre, por lo que no sólo será emotivo por el acontecimiento histórico, sino que también retrata ciertas dificultades en el vínculo.

Powerful and captivating, a balanced mix of art and accompanying text, this work is magnificent in its style and full of emotional tension, passed down through the generations, between father and son. It was originally published in two separate volumes, the first called My Father Bleeds History (1986) and Maus II: And Here My Troubles Began (1991). Today both titles are in a single volume.

Poderosa y cautivante, mezcla equilibrada entre el arte y el texto que la acompaña, esta obra es magnífica en su estilo y llena de tensión emocional y transmitido por generaciones, entre padre e hijo. En principio se publicó en dos tomos distintos, el primero llamado “Relato de un superviviente, mi padre sangra historia” y la segunda parte “ y aquí comenzaron mis problemas” [My Father Bleeds History (1986) y Maus II: And Here My Troubles Began (1991)] Hoy ambos títulos están en un solo tomo.

Our artist (Art) sets out to make a novel that contains details and data from his father's (Vladek) stories about these past years, then he self-portraits himself and also tells about his visits and the interaction between them, and the current life (let's not forget that it was released in the '80s) With mind-blowing details, like the fact that the characters were portrayed by animals that were chosen to characterize the different peoples: the mice are the Jewish people, the cats are the Germans, the pigs are non-Jewish Poles and the dogs are Americans.

Nuestro artista (Art) se propone hacer una novela que contenga detalles y datos de las historias de su padre (Vladek) sobre estos años pasados, entonces se autoretrata y cuenta también sus visitas y la interacción entre ambos, y la vida actual (no olvidemos que fue lanzada en los años ‘80) Con alucinantes detalles, como el hecho de que los personajes fueron retratados por animales que fueron elegidos para caracterizar a los distintos pueblos: los ratones son el pueblo judío, los gatos son los alemanes, los cerdos son polacos no judíos y los perros son estadounidenses.

With a level of complexity that goes from the simplicity of his drawings, supported by the traumas, situations that are lived among the characters and the historical, there is no waste in Maus, so much so that it will leave you wondering how this could have happened in this world less than 80 years ago. It conveys its emotions directly and fully. He doesn't give too much away with some things, and it's charming for example, in terms of translations, some details that have been preserved “badly translated” this makes it without a doubt a magnificent work through the ages.

Con un nivel de complejidad que va desde lo simple de sus dibujos, apoyado por los traumas, situaciones que se viven entre los personajes y lo histórico, no hay desperdicio en Maus, tanto es así que te dejará pensando, cómo es que esto puede haber sucedido en este mundo hace menos de 80 años. Transmite sus emociones de manera directa y plena. No da muchas vueltas con algunas cosas, y es encantador por ejemplo, en cuanto a las traducciones, algunos detalles que se han conservado “mal traducidos” esto lo vuelve sin lugar a dudas una obra magnífica a través de los tiempos.

With its black and white style it manages to make a lot of strength in the story. What has to happen, just happens, with a certain rawness, brutality. And the emotions that we are experiencing lack of dyes or color, everything is a bit heavy and dark to tell the truth, although there are situations that take us away from the traumatic, the theme revolves around it, no matter how much we want to leave. Not suitable for the sensitive, it should not be taken as “a book of cartoons” and do not think that by having them, the subject does not allow not touch in depth. If you are like me, you will probably stop to cry or meditate several times. At times I found myself slowing down and raising my eyes to the horizon without being able to believe what I was reading... you can't say I didn't notice it, with that said, I wish you a good read, if you are on your way to it. But let's get on with my review!

Con su estilo en blanco y negro logra hacer mucha fuerza en la historia. Lo que tiene que suceder, sucede sin más, con cierta crudeza, brutalidad. Y las emociones que vamos experimentando carecen de tintes o color, todo es un poco pesado y oscuro a decir verdad, aunque existan situaciones que nos alejan de lo traumático, la temática gira en torno a ello, no importa cuánto queramos salir. No apto para sensibles, no debe ser tomado como “un libro de dibujitos” y no penséis que por tenerlos, el tema no permite no toca en profundidad. Si eres como yo, seguramente frenes a llorar o meditar varias veces. En oportunidades me vi frenando y levantando mi vista al horizonte sin poder creer lo que leía… no podrán decir que no lo advertí, con esto dicho, les deseo una buena lectura, si se encaminan a ella. Pero sigamos con mi reseña!

At some point it was used as study material for schools, which is very striking, although it is so current that in the year 2022 it was also censored in Tennessee, how crazy, right? I don't want to fail to point out that it won a Pulitzer Prize, being the first graphic novel to obtain it. I don't understand how some people demean these works, when as a literary work, they also have a content that surpasses it, and I don't say that because of the artistic aspect of the illustrations, but because of what the artist wanted to portray, and the work he actually achieved.

En algún momento fue usada como material de estudio para las escuelas, lo cual es muy llamativo, aunque está tan vigente que en el año 2022 también fue censurada en Tennessee, qué locura, verdad? No quiero dejar de destacar que ganó un premio Pulitzer, siendo la primera novela gráfica en obtenerlo. No entiendo cómo algunos desmerecen estos trabajos, cuando como obra literaria, también tienen un contenido que la sobrepasa, y no lo digo por lo artístico en cuanto a sus ilustraciones, sino a lo que el artista quiso retratar, y la obra que realmente consiguió.

I think I would never have imagined a comic breaking structures and being a masterpiece while serving for studies, there is no other way to contemplate it, we are facing a masterpiece, perhaps unique in its kind and historical quality. Creo que jamás hubiera imaginado un cómic rompiendo estructuras y siendo una obra maestra a la vez que sirve para estudios, no hay otra manera de contemplarlo, estamos ante una obra maestra, quizás única en su especie y su calidad histórica. Personally this title really gets through to me and I say again that I have fallen in love with it on another level. I wish I could share with you other graphic novels I have read, but I have not been able to buy them to have my own version. Someday I hope to return to this genre, but this is the end of this publication and my return to literature, surely we will have more books to share soon. Greetings, community, have a nice Tuesday!

En lo personal este título me atraviesa mucho y vuelvo a decir que me ha enamorado a otro nivel. Quisiera poder compartirles otras novelas gráficas que he leído, pero no las he podido comprar para tener mi versión propia, algún día espero volver con este género, pero así doy por concluída esta publicación y mi vuelta a la literatura, seguramente tengamos más libros que compartir pronto.
