Deciding to camp at the Laguna del Caminante was a good decision because despite the cold, we were able to have a good mountain experience. Trekking with a heavy backpack on our backs made things more interesting, and on our second day of trekking, this was going to be even more noticeable. The route that had taken us to this part of the Ushuaia Mountains was in the shape of a ‘U’, and we had chosen to start in the easier half. The real challenge came on the second day, when we had to face the steepest climb of all, but with the reward of seeing the beautiful Jimbo Cave and the great Sheep Canyon ❣️.
Haber decidido acampar en la Laguna del Caminante fue una buena decisión porque a pesar del frío, pudimos tener una buena experiencia de montaña. Hacer trekking con la mochila pesada a cuestas volvió las cosas más interesantes, y en nuestro segundo día de caminata, esto iba a notarse aún más. La ruta que nos había llevado a esta parte de las montañas de Ushuaia tenía forma de "U", y habíamos elegido empezar por la mitad más fácil. El verdadero desafío fue el segundo día, cuando teníamos que enfrentar el mayor desnivel de todos, pero con la recompensa de ver la hermosa Cueva de Jimbo y el gran Cañadón de la Oveja ❣️.
On the second day of our trek, I had to complete my volunteer shift at the hostel at 4 PM, so we had to cover the 16 kilometres to the other end of the trail by that time. To achieve this, my companion and I set up camp and started walking around 9 AM, figuring that would be plenty of time to get there on time. When we started walking, we were going well at first because the section was downhill, but it wasn't long before we were faced with the big climb that everyone was talking about.
En el segundo día de nuestro trekking, yo tenía que cumplir mi turno de voluntariado en el hostel a las 4 PM, por lo que debíamos recorrer los 16 kilómetros que nos separaban del otro extremo del sendero antes de esa hora. Para lograrlo, mi acompañante y yo levantamos nuestro campamento y empezamos a caminar alrededor de las 9 AM, considerando que sería tiempo suficiente como para llegar a tiempo. Cuando empezamos a caminar, al principio íbamos bien porque el tramo era en bajada, pero no tardamos en enfrentarnos a la gran subida de la que todos hablaban.
On this stretch, we were heading for the so-called Paso de la Oveja, a mountain pass between two large peaks. Although the path was well marked, it still had the difficulty that the wind in that area was quite strong. Several times we had to stop to take shelter from it, even though there were not that many places to do so. I had at least 10 kg of extra weight in my backpack, and even so, the wind still managed to destabilise my steps.
En este tramo, nos estábamos dirigiendo al llamado Paso de la Oveja, un paso de montaña entre dos grandes picos. A pesar de que el sendero estaba bien marcado, igualmente tenía la dificultad de que el viento que había en esa zona era bastante fuerte. Varias veces tuvimos que parar a resguardarnos un poco de él, a pesar de que no había tantos lugares para hacerlo. Yo tenía por lo menos 10 kg de peso extra en la mochila, y aún así, el viento que había lograba desestabilizar mis pasos.
It took us two hours to complete this section and climb to the top of the pass, before we could finally start to descend a little. In the distance, we could make out a turn-off, with a well-marked path, which was the access to Jimbo Cave. I had been to this place about two months before, but I had come from the opposite side and at that time it was covered with snow, so now that it was all melted it was a bit difficult for me to recognise it. It's amazing how the landscapes change with the different seasons.
Nos tomó dos horas completar este tramo y subir hasta lo más alto del paso, para finalmente poder empezar a bajar un poco. A lo lejos, pudimos divisar un desvío, con un camino bien marcado, que se trataba del acceso a la Cueva de Jimbo. Yo ya había estado en este lugar unos dos meses atrás, pero había llegado desde el lado contrario y en ese momento todo estaba cubierto de nieve, por lo que ahora que estaba todo derretido me había costado un poco reconocerlo. Es increíble como cambian los paisajes con las distintas estaciones del año.
Starting from the main road, the detour to Jimbo Cave took only 20 minutes. In October, the same stretch had taken us almost an hour. Arriving here and seeing it all clear was incredible, but the cave was as majestic as ever. In the snowy season, it seems to blend in with the landscape, but at that moment it stood out perfectly.
Partiendo del camino principal, el desvío hasta la Cueva de Jimbo nos tomó solo 20 minutos. En octubre, el mismo tramo nos había tomado casi una hora. Llegar a este lugar y verlo todo despejado fue algo increíble, pero la cueva seguía igual de majestuosa como siempre. En época de nieve, pareciera que se camufla con el paisaje, pero en ese momento resaltaba perfectamente.
This cave is actually a tunnel that is forbidden to enter. This glacial formation, thousands of years old, has constant ice rock slides, so it is very dangerous to enter. There has even been a fatal accident here, so this makes hikers who come here very sensitive.
Esta cueva en realidad es un túnel al cual está prohibido su ingreso. Esta formación glaciaria de miles de años tienen constantes desprendimientos de piedra con hielos, por lo que es muy peligroso entrar. Incluso ha habido un accidente mortal acá, por lo que eso sensibiliza mucho a los caminantes que llegan hasta este lugar.
Unfortunately, this cave no longer exists because it collapsed in January this year, so the photos from this trek are a real treasure. The unexpected collapse happened just a week after we did this walk, so I was glad to have had some last views of this cool place. I also had the opportunity to leave our Worldmappin sticker as a token of my time there.
Lamentablemente, en la actualidad esta cueva ya no existe más porque se derrumbó en enero de este año, por lo que las fotos de este trekking son un verdadero tesoro. El derrumbe inesperado sucedió apenas una semana después de que hicimos este paseo, así que me alegró haber tenido unas últimas vistas de este lugar genial. También tuve la oportunidad de dejar nuestro sticker de Worldmappin como muestra de mi paso por ahí.
After drinking some hot tea to keep our spirits up on this cold day, we continued our walk back to the city. The last part of this trek takes you through the big Cañadon de la Oveja, crossing a mountain ridge with a tiny trail. On my previous visit to this place, I had done only this half of the trek, but now I was completing it as part of a grand tour. Walking with a view of the Beagle Channel was beautiful, plus the sky was completely clear and bright.
Después de tomar un poco de té caliente para que nos vuelva el alma al cuerpo en ese día tan frío, continuamos nuestra caminata de vuelta a la ciudad. El último tramo de este trekking te lleva por el gran Cañadón de la Oveja, atravesando un filo de montaña con un sendero diminuto. En mi anterior visita a esta lugar, había hecho solo esta mitad del recorrido, pero ahora la estaba completando como parte de una gran vuelta. Caminar teniendo la vista hacia el Canal de Beagle era hermoso, además de que el cielo estaba completamente despejado y brillante.
We hadn't realised that the time had passed so quickly, but it was almost 3 PM and we still hadn't finished the tour. We had to do the last part almost running to get there just in time. The worst part was that when we got off the trail, we weren't even close, so we had to take a taxi to the hostel. I'm happy to say that I made it to my shift with 5 minutes to spare: on the edge, but on time.
No nos habíamos dado cuenta de que la hora había pasado tan rápido, pero ya eran casi las 3 PM y todavía no habíamos terminado el recorrido. Tuvimos que hacer la última parte casi corriendo para llegar justo a tiempo. La peor parte, era que al salir del sendero, ni siquiera estábamos cerca, por lo que teníamos que tomar un taxi hasta el hostel. Me alegra decir que llegué a mi turno de trabajo con 5 minutos de sobra: al límite, pero puntual.
This whole trek of 32 kilometres was one of my favourites in Ushuaia. There are people who do this trek all in the same day, but my recommendation is to do it camping, if possible. Besides, walking with a backpack on my back was an additional challenge I enjoyed having. After the cold I had during those two days, I was grateful to be back in the hostel with the heating and hot shower: I like nature, but going back home was something to look forward to ❤️.
Todo este trekking de 32 kilómetros totales fue uno de mis favoritos en Ushuaia. Hay gente que hace este recorrido todo el mismo día, pero mi recomendación es hacerlo acampando, si existe la posibilidad. Además, caminar con la mochila a cuestas fue un desafío adicional que me gustó tener. Después de tanto frío que tuve esos dos días, agradecí volver al hostel con la calefacción y ducha caliente: me gusta la naturaleza, pero volver a casa fue algo muy ansiado ❤️.
