When I started writing this blog back in 2020, I had only visited 9 of Argentina's 23 provinces. It was a very ambitious goal for me

, but that same desire fueled my journey. This post is about my visit to the 20th province on my list, and I can hardly believe it myself. But I have to, because visiting Santiago del Estero was the beginning of a beautiful adventure and the final step toward achieving my #travelgoal ❤️.

Cuando empecé a escribir en este blog allá por 2020, solo había conocido 9 de las 23 provincias que tiene Argentina. Fue una meta muy ambiciosa para mí
que me faltaban, pero ese mismo deseo fue el motor que me impulsó a seguir el viaje. Esta publicación va a tratarse sobre mi visita a la provincia número 20 en mi lista, y ni yo lo puedo creer. Pero tengo que hacerlo, porque ir a conocer Santiago del Estero fue el inicio de una hermosa travesía y el último primer pasito para terminar de lograr mi #travelgoal ❤️.

At the beginning of this year, I set two very clear goals: to finish visiting all the provinces of my country, and to get a job that would allow me to practice my profession. By then it was May, and I already had everything planned out in my head to achieve the first of my goals. Well, in my head and on a big spreadsheet too: I had planned a route that would allow me to visit the four provinces I hadn't yet explored (Santiago del Estero, Chaco, Formosa y Corrientes), as well as a short trip to Paraguay to visit my friend. Luckily, these last four provinces were right next to each other in the northeast of my country, so it was easy to map out the route before setting off on the trip.

A principio de este año, me había puesto dos metas muy claras: terminar de conocer todas las provincias de mi país, y conseguir un trabajo que me permitiera ejercer mi profesión. Para entonces era mayo, y en mi cabeza ya tenía todo ideado para cumplir el primero de mis deseos. Bueno, en mi cabeza y en un gran excel también: había planeado una ruta que me permitiera conocer las cuatro provincias que me faltaban (Santiago del Estero, Chaco, Formosa y Corrientes), además de una pequeña escapada hasta Paraguay a visitar a mi amiga. Por suerte, estas últimas cuatro provincias estaban una al lado de la otra en el noreste de mi país, así que fue sencillo trazar la ruta antes de emprender el viaje.

Unlike most of my previous trips, this one would be a guest trip. Since these provinces aren't very touristy, it was difficult to find volunteer opportunities to save on accommodation, so the best option was to use some of my savings and pay for my lodging night by night. In total, my final itinerary was a 17-day trip, including 14 nights of accommodation (I spent the remaining nights traveling, which also saved me some money). In total, I spent about $600 USD on this trip, all from my Hive earnings. Eternally grateful ❤️.

A diferencia de la mayoría de los viajes que había hecho anteriormente, este viaje sería en modo huésped. Como estas provincias no son tan turísticas, se me hacía difícil conseguir voluntariados para ahorrar en estadía, así que la mejor opción fue tomar un poco de mis ahorros e ir pagando noche por noche mi alojamiento. En total, mi itinerario final estuvo formado por un paseo de 17 días en total, incluyendo 14 noches de alojamiento (las restantes las pasé viajando de noche, ahí también ahorré un poco). En total, para todo este viaje invertí unos 600 USD, todos provenientes de mis ingresos de Hive. Eternamente agradecida ❤️.

The day to begin my journey arrived, and I was incredibly nervous but happy because I had everything meticulously planned, down to the smallest detail of expenses. My first stop, and the 20th province on my list, was in Santiago del Estero, in the city of Termas de Río Hondo. There, I found a centrally located hotel that, for $20 a night, included breakfast, dinner, and access to the thermal water pool, as well as a room with a private bathroom. While the facilities weren't the most modern, the place served its purpose: it was clean and had good internet so I could continue my work as a curator for Worldmappin.

Llegó el día de empezar la travesía y yo estaba super nerviosa pero feliz porque tenía todo bien planeado, con detalle de gastos incluido. Mi primer parada y mi paso número 20 en mi lista de provincias fue en Santiago del Estero, en la ciudad de Termas de Río Hondo. Ahí consegui un hotel céntrico que por $20 la noche me incluyó desayuno, cena y pileta de agua termal, además de una habitación con baño privado. Si bien las instalaciones no eran de lo más modernas, el lugar cumplía su función de ser limpio y tener buen internet para que pudiera continuar con mi trabajo de curadora en Worldmappin.

After a 12-hour bus journey covering 1200 km, arriving in the city on a rainy day was frustrating. However, the forecast was right when it said the weather would clear up in the afternoon. While I was at the hotel waiting for it to clear up and catching up on my Hive tasks, I met Carina, a singer who was also traveling alone in the city. We quickly became friends, and just a few hours later, we were exploring the streets of Termas de Río Hondo together.

Después de un viaje de 12 horas recorriendo 1200 km en bus, llegar a la ciudad en un día de lluvia fue algo frustrante. Sin embargo, el pronóstico no se equivocó cuando dijo que mejoraría por la tarde. Mientras estaba en el hotel esperando que esto pasara y poniendome al día con mis tareas de Hive, conocí a Carina, una mujer cantante que también viajaba sola por la ciudad. Enseguida nos hicimos amigas y apenas unas horas después, ya estabamos juntas recorriendo las calles de Termas de Río Hondo.

The province of Santiago del Estero is practically invisible to foreign tourists and even largely unexplored by Argentine tourists themselves. I would venture to say that its main attraction is its hotels with thermal pools, and that's why the city was full of them: there was literally one every two steps. This means that its target audience is primarily retirees looking to relax in a place that offers all the comforts of a comfortable hotel, without sacrificing a bit of city life and some nature in the surrounding area. In short: it's a city for seniors, but one that's worth visiting at least once.

La provincia de Santiago del Estero es prácticamente invisible para el turismo extranjero y hasta muy poco explorada por el propio turista argentino. Me atrevería a decir que su principal atractivo son sus hoteles con piletas de agua termales, y por eso la ciudad estaba lleno de ellos: literalmente había un hotel cada dos pasos. Esto hace que su público objetivo sen principalmente los jubiliados que buscan relajarse en un lugar que ofrezca todas las comodidades que un cómodo hotel puede tener, sin resignar un poco de movimiento de ciudad y algo de naturaleza en los alrededores. En resumen: es una ciudad como para abuelitos, pero que vale la pena visitar al menos una vez.

My new friend Carina had arrived in the city the day before me, and since her job was singing at hotel dinners, she had the day free so we could go for a walk. She already knew the area, so she gave me a tour of the city, and we walked a bit until we saw the Río Dulce. It wasn't the most beautiful scenery I'd ever seen, but it was nice, and luckily it had stopped raining, so I was happy to be able to make the most of the first of the three days I planned to stay there.

Mi nueva amiga Carina había llegado a la ciudad el día anterior que yo, y como su trabajo era cantar en las cenas de los hoteles, tenía el día libre para que fueramos a caminar un poco. Ella ya conocía el lugar, así que me hizo un tour por la ciudad y caminamos un poco hasta ver el Río Dulce. No fue el paisaje más hermoso que ví en mi vida, pero era lindo y por suerte ya no llovía más así que estaba contenta por poder aprovechar el primer día de los tres que tenía pensado quedarme por ahí.

Another thing that struck me about this city is that, unlike many others in Argentina, it doesn't have the typical layout of a central plaza surrounded by important buildings. The town hall was in one place, the police station in another, and the school and church in yet another. Everything was quite spread out, but of course, facing the main square, there were plenty of luxurious hotels and a large casino. Well, you have to keep all those tourists entertained, right?

Otra cosa que me llamó la atención de esta ciudad es que, a diferencia de muchas otras de Argentina, no conserva su típica distribución de plaza central con edificios importantes alrededor. La municipalidad quedaba en un lugar, la oficina de policia en otro, la escuela y la iglesia en otro. Todo estaba bastante desparramado, pero frente a la plaza principal por supuesto no podían faltar los lujosos hoteles y un gran casino. Bueno, hay que entrener a todos esos turistas, ¿no?

I really enjoyed exploring the city with someone who was practically a local: it saved me from having to frantically use the GPS trying to find my way around. On my first solo trip as a guest, I wasn't alone anymore because I quickly made a friend for those days. It also felt good to pay for my room and not have to do volunteer work to save money. That was the great thing about having savings beforehand: now I could enjoy my day however I wanted 😃.

Me gustó mucho recorrer la ciudad con alguien casi local: esto me impidió tener que andar como una loca con el GPS tratando de ubicarme. En mi primer viaje sola como huésped, ya no estaba sola porque rápidamente pude hacerme una amiga para esos días. También se sintió bien pagar por mi habitación y olvidarme de tener que trabajar voluntariamente para ahorrar dinero. Eso fue lo bueno de tener ahorros previos: ahora podía disfrutar de mi día como yo quisiera 😃.

Visiting the city of Termas de Río Hondo was something I had planned to do during my stay in Catamarca in August 2024, but due to time constraints, I couldn't manage it. However, I finally made it happen in May 2025: better late than never. Once again, I proved to myself that if I have a goal in mind, I won't stop until I achieve it. I was very excited to stroll through the streets of Santiago del Estero, and above all, to continue getting closer to the end of my cherished travel goal. It no longer seemed so far away ❤️.

Conocer la ciudad de Termas de Río Hondo era algo que había pensado hacer durante mi estadía en Catamarca en agosto 2024, pero que por cuestiones de tiempo, no pude lograr. De todos modos, lo terminé concretando en mayo 2025: tarde pero seguro. Una vez más me demostré a mi misma que si tengo una meta enfrente, no voy a parar hasta completarla. Estaba muy emocionada por pasear por las calles de Santiago del Estero, y por sobre todo, seguir acercándome al final de mi preciado objetivo viajero. Ya no se veía tan lejano ❤️.
