Hey everyone, hope you're all doing great, my fellow Otakus. On this occasion, I want to share a new review with you. I'll be talking about a curious anime called Citrus... it was very popular back in its day, so I said, 'alright, fine,' sat down, turned on my computer, and started to see what all the fuss was about. And... oof. It was... quite an experience, I swear, and it left me with a ton of mixed feelings... the good kind, and the kind that make you want to smash your monitor, for real. So, for those of you who have basically been living under a rock and were spared from the Citrus algorithm, let me tell you what it's about. The story is a yuri, meaning a romance between girls, and it centers on Yuzu. She's your typical super-fashionable, high-energy but slightly clueless teenager who only cares about boys, makeup, and having a good time. Well, her whole life gets turned upside down when her mom remarries and they have to move.

Her dreams of an amazing high school romance go down the drain as soon as she finds out her new school is an ultra-strict all-girls boarding school... and to top it all off, it turns out her new stepsister, who she now has to live with, is none other than Mei Aihara: the student council president, a beautiful girl, cold as an iceberg, and intimidating just by breathing. And so, the plot is about how these two, who are like oil and water, manage to survive as sisters... and deal with the love that starts to blossom, or as they call it in the series, that "something more."

Hola a todos, espero que estén genial amigos Otakus, en esta ocasión les quiero compartir una nueva reseña, les hablaré de un anime curioso, se llama Citrus.. fue muy popular en su momento, dije ‘bueno, ya’, me senté, prendí la compu y me puse a ver de qué iba tanto alboroto. Y… uff. Simplemente… fue toda una experiencia, se los juro, y me dejó con un montón de sentimientos encontrados… de los buenos y de los que te hacen querer estrellar el monitor, de verdad.. así que, para los que de plano han vivido debajo de una piedra y se salvaron del algoritmo de Citrus, déjenme les cuento de qué va. La historia es un yuri, o sea, un romance entre chicas, y se centra en Yuzu, ella es la típica adolescente súper a la moda, con mucha energía pero medio despistada, a la que solo le importan los chicos, el maquillaje y pasarla bien.. pues toda su vida se pone de cabeza cuando su mamá se vuelve a casar y se tienen que mudar.

Sus sueños de tener un romance de prepa increíble se van al caño en cuanto se entera de que su nueva escuela es un internado para señoritas, ultra estricto.. y para rematar, resulta que su nueva hermanastra, con la que ahora tiene que vivir, es nada más y nada menos que Mei Aihara: la presidenta del consejo estudiantil, una chica hermosa, fría como un témpano y que intimida con solo respirar. Y pues la trama va de cómo estas dos, que son como el agua y el aceite, le hacen para sobrevivir como hermanas… y para lidiar con ese amor que empieza a surgir, o como le dicen en la serie, ese “algo más”.

Okay, so when I started watching it, I was genuinely hyped. The idea of a 'super conservative, super strict' school... I was like, 'Oof, this is it! This is going to be amazing!'. Imagine a story about a girl discovering who she is in such a restrictive environment… it would have been a brutal plot, something that could have truly broken the mold within the yuri genre! The potential for deep character dives, for real, weighty conflict, was HUGE. The first episode seemed to prove me right; Yuzu shows up in her trendy clothes, breaking the rules, and is immediately stopped by Mei and the student council. I was already rubbing my hands together, thinking, "Yes, here comes the good stuff, the drama!". But then... nothing.

They throw that entire plotline in the trash within two episodes. After that first clash, Yuzu keeps her hidden phone and modified uniform, and suddenly, nobody gives a damn. The big "problem" with her clothes, which was sold to us as super important, ceases to be an obstacle. The supposedly strict school becomes a mere facade, a set piece. That was my first major disappointment, seriously. They build up all this incredible drama and then, poof, they just drop it. Which brings me to the characters... let's start with Mei. Oh, Mei... what can I say? She's the definition of an ice queen with a tragic past. The show tells us she's traumatized because her dad abandoned her... okay, you can work with that, right? It gives you material for a layered character. But instead of exploring that trauma properly, they use it as the cheapest excuse for her to be cold and manipulative. She takes out her issues on people like Yuzu, who she just met, instead of, I don't know, seeing a therapist, for God's sake! Honestly, you can describe Mei to me in 10 seconds: she's cold, has daddy issues, and goes around kissing people randomly to create drama. That's it. The end. There's nothing more.

Her lack of depth is infuriating. Then there's Yuzu... look, at first, I really liked her. She felt very believable. The show did a great job showing her different sides: her superficial part, obsessed with her looks, but also her cooler, more principled side, like when she defended her friend. She felt like a real teenager, with her good and bad traits... but as the story progresses, it's like they dropped her IQ by 50 points. She becomes a super flat, kind of dumb character whose only mission in life is to try and figure out the other girl, who is an emotional black hole. All the cool stuff she had at the beginning, poof, just vanished.

A ver, cuando arranqué a verla, yo de verdad estaba con todo el hype, es que la idea de una escuela ‘súper conservadora, súper estricta’... yo dije: ‘¡Uff, de aquí somos! ¡Esto va a estar increíble!’. Imagínense, una historia de una chica descubriendo quién es en un ambiente así de cerrado… ¡hubiera sido una trama brutal, algo que la rompiera de verdad dentro del género yuri! El potencial para clavarse en los personajes, para un conflicto real, que pesara, era GIGANTE.. el primer capítulo como que me dio la razón, sale Yuzu con su ropa toda a la moda, rompiendo las reglas, y al toque la frena Mei con el consejo estudiantil. Yo ya me estaba sobando las manos, pensando: “¡Uff, aquí empieza lo bueno, el drama!”. Pero luego… nada.

Es que toda esa trama la tiran a la basura en dos capítulos.. después de ese primer encontronazo, Yuzu sigue con su celular escondido y el uniforme modificado y de repente a nadie le importa un pimiento. El “problemón” de la ropa, que nos lo vendieron como algo súper importante, deja de ser un obstáculo, la supuesta escuela estricta se vuelve pura fachada, un adorno, esa fue mi primera gran decepción, en serio. Te arman todo este drama increíble y de la nada, ¡puf!, lo dejan tirado, eso me lleva a los personajes.. empecemos con Mei, ay, Mei… qué te digo, es la definición de la reina de hielo con pasado trágico. La serie nos dice que está toda traumada porque su papá la abandonó.. okay, con eso se puede trabajar, ¿no? Te da para hacer un personaje con capas, pero en lugar de explorar ese trauma bien, lo usan como la excusa más barata para que sea fría y manipuladora. Se desquita de sus problemas con gente como Yuzu, que la acaba de conocer, en vez de ir a que la trate, no sé, ¡un terapeuta, por el amor de Dios! La verdad, a Mei me la describes en 10 segundos: es fría, tiene pedos con su papá y anda besando gente a lo loco para crear drama.. ya. Fin. No hay más.

Es que saca de quicio la poca profundidad que tiene, luego está Yuzu.. mira que al principio me caía súper bien, se sentía muy creíble, la serie nos mostró muy bien sus diferentes lados: su parte superficial, obsesionada con cómo se ve, pero también su lado más chido, con valores, cuando defendió a su amiga. Se sentía como una adolescente de verdad, con sus cosas buenas y malas.. pero conforme avanza la historia, es como si le bajaran 50 puntos de IQ.. se vuelve un personaje súper plano, medio tonto, cuya única misión en la vida es intentar descifrar a la otra, que es un hoyo negro de emociones, todo lo chido que tenía al principio, ¡puf!, se esfumó.

And this brings us to the concept of love in this series which, I'll tell you right now, is just awful. The way the romance starts is… horrible. It's not a beautiful connection that blossoms, not at all. It's a forced kiss, one that nobody asked for, that happens because Mei wants to shut Yuzu up... and from that single, super aggressive moment, Yuzu somehow gets hooked, and badly. She falls for a girl who is a complete stranger, who has done nothing but be super cruel to her, and who, to top it off, is now her sister. It's in moments like300 these that you realize the anime industry sometimes prefers to churn out cheap, mass-produced garbage made just for shock value, instead of building a believable and healthy relationship. It's all about the initial hook, and the substance... well, maybe that comes later... or, as in this case, it never arrives.

What bothered me the most was the absolute lack of questioning about Yuzu's sexuality. At the beginning, they make it crystal clear that she likes boys; she's depressed about going to an all-girls school precisely because she wants to meet guys. Then, after one traumatic kiss from Mei, she's suddenly a lesbian overnight. And she doesn't question it, not for a second. There's no internal monologue, no confusion, no moment of, "Wait a minute, didn't I like men?... What is this I'm feeling?". Nothing. For a teenager, especially in a supposedly ultra-conservative environment, that's just not realistic. Adolescence is a mess of emotions; to think someone would change their entire sexual identity just like that, without even a little reflection, is just incredibly lazy writing.

So you have this super dramatic and problematic start to a relationship... you'd think the series would take the time to develop it, right? Wrong! The pacing of their relationship is slooow, like, really, really slow. It's a huge detriment to the show, a real drag. After those first two explosive chapters, Yuzu and Mei spend the next ten episodes basically playing 'I love you, but let's not.' It's an endless cycle of one step forward, two steps back. Mei pushes her away, Yuzu gets sad, Mei does one tiny thing that could be considered nice, and Yuzu is obsessed all over again. It's exhausting to watch a 12-episode series where the main couple spends the entire time doing everything possible to not be in a relationship.

Y con esto llegamos al concepto del amor en esta serie que, se los digo de una vez, es una cosa espantosa.. la forma en que arranca el romance es… horrible, no es una conexión bonita que va naciendo, qué va. Es un beso a la fuerza, uno que nadie pidió, que pasa porque Mei quiere callar a Yuzu.. y a partir de ese único momento súper agresivo, Yuzu de alguna manera se clava, pero mal, se enamora de una chica que es una completa desconocida, que no ha hecho más que ser súper cruel con ella y que, para colmo, ahora es su hermana. Es en momentos así que te das cuenta de que la industria del anime a veces prefiere sacar basura barata al por mayor, hecha nomás para impactar, en lugar de construir una relación creíble y sana, todo es por el gancho del inicio, y la sustancia ya si eso vendrá después… o, como en este caso, nunca llega.

Lo que más me molestó fue la absoluta falta de cuestionamiento sobre la sexualidad de Yuzu.. al principio nos dejan clarísimo que a ella le gustan los chicos, está deprimida por ir a una escuela de puras mujeres precisamente porque quiere conocer vatos.. luego, después de un beso traumático de Mei, de la noche a la mañana ya es lesbiana. Y no lo cuestiona, ni por un segundo, no hay un monólogo interno, no hay confusión, no hay un momento de “A ver, espérate, ¿no que a mí me gustaban los hombres?… ¿qué es esta vaina que siento?”. Nada. Para una adolescente, y más en un ambiente que se supone es ultra conservador, eso simplemente no es realista.. la adolescencia es un desmadre de emociones; pensar que alguien va a cambiar toda su identidad sexual así como así, sin siquiera reflexionar un poquito, es simplemente un guion flojísimo.

Así que tienes este inicio de relación súper dramático y problemático.. uno pensaría que la serie se tomaría el tiempo para desarrollarlo, ¿verdad? ¡Pues no! El ritmo de su relación es leeeento, pero leeeento, leeeento, eso le juega súper en contra a la serie, es un lastre.. después de esos dos primeros capítulos explosivos, Yuzu y Mei se la pasan los siguientes diez episodios básicamente jugando al “te quiero pero mejor no”. Es un ciclo sin fin de un paso pa’lante y dos pa’trás. Mei la aleja, Yuzu se pone triste, Mei hace una cosita que podría ser amable, y Yuzu otra vez vuelve a estar obsesionada, es agotador ver una serie de 12 capítulos donde la pareja principal se la pasa haciendo hasta lo imposible por no tener una relación.

And just when my frustration was about to boil over, the series decides to introduce a new character... a character I can only describe as a monstrosity. Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you, Matsuri. This sort of pink-haired gremlin shows up halfway through the series and gave me a massive headache... and I mean a bad one. Matsuri is Yuzu's childhood friend who, out of nowhere, starts liking girls, specifically Yuzu. She is, without exaggeration, completely unhinged. This girl harasses Yuzu, emotionally manipulates her, and even blackmails Mei, threatening to expose her with one of her super-shady, pedophilic contacts she has online. I'm not kidding, I swear. Why Yuzu remains her friend is something I truly don't understand. The show tries to justify it with a single flashback of them making a mud pie. That's not enough!

She's chaos on legs who only exists to stir up trouble, and I hated every second she was on screen. Honestly, watching this series was quite an experience. At times, it genuinely made me sad, it made me cringe, and it definitely stressed me out a lot. There's a scene where one character asks if another is 8 or 14 years old, and that line hit me hard, because that's how I felt watching some of the interactions. This anime could have been so, so much better. It had all the elements for a truly engaging story, but it seems like it threw them all in the trash and went for cheap fan service instead. But here's the thing that drives me crazy... it's not all bad. Despite all my complaints, the animation is genuinely good. The soundtrack is well-placed and really sets the mood. And the opening and ending? They're absolute bangers. They're super catchy and fit the story perfectly. I never skipped the opening, not once. And that's what makes it so frustrating! It looks and sounds like a high-quality drama, but the script underneath is a total disaster.

So, after all this, what's my final verdict? I'm horribly conflicted. I genuinely like the main characters, even when they're driving me crazy—except for Matsuri. I hate Matsuri with all my soul. But Yuzu and Mei, with all their problems, have moments that really get to you. The series has this strange quality that hooks you. I spent the whole time complaining, but I also couldn't stop watching. In the end, I think I'd give it a 7/10. And it's the most conflicted and confusing 7 I've ever given in my life. The visuals, the music, and the raw potential are great. The script, pacing, and character logic are a 4 or a 5. The average results in a series I both enjoyed and was angered by at the same time... and well, that's all for today, take care! Byebye!

Y justo cuando mi frustración ya estaba a punto de explotar, la serie decide meter a un nuevo personaje.. un personaje que solo puedo describir como una monstruosidad, damas y caballeros, les presento a Matsuri.. esta especie de gremlin con pelo rosado aparece a mitad de la serie y me dio un dolor de cabeza… pero de los buenos. Matsuri es la amiga de la infancia de Yuzu que, de la nada, le empiezan a gustar las chicas, y en específico Yuzu.. es, sin exagerar, una completa desquiciada, esta tipa acosa a Yuzu, la manipula emocionalmente y hasta chantajea a Mei, amenazándola con exponerla con uno de sus contactos pedófilos súper turbios que tiene en internet. No estoy bromeando, se los juro. Por qué Yuzu sigue siendo su amiga es algo que de verdad no entiendo, la serie intenta justificarlo con un solo flashback de ellas haciendo un pastel de lodo. ¡Con eso no alcanza!

Es un caos con patas que solo existe para crear problemas, y odié cada segundo que salió en pantalla.. la verdad, ver esta serie fue toda una experiencia, a veces, genuinamente me hizo sentir triste, me dio cosa y definitivamente me estresó un montón. Hay una escena donde un personaje pregunta si otro tiene 8 o 14 años, y esa frase me pegó durísimo, porque así me sentía viendo algunas de las interacciones.. este anime pudo haber sido mucho, pero mucho mejor, tenía todos los elementos para una historia que te enganchara de verdad, pero parece que los tiró todos a la basura y se fue por el fan service barato. Pero aquí viene lo que me vuelve loco… no todo es malo.. a pesar de todas mis quejas, la animación es genuinamente buena.. la serie es preciosa, se ve increíble, sobre todo en las escenas más tiernas y románticas. Y la música también está sólida! El soundtrack está bien puesto, te mete bien en el ambiente. ¿Y el opening y el ending? Son unos temazos, son súper pegajosos y le quedan perfecto a la historia.. nunca me salté el opening, ni una sola vez. ¡Y eso es lo que lo hace tan frustrante! Se ve y se escucha como un drama de los buenos, pero el guion debajo es un desastre total.

Entonces, después de todo esto, ¿cuál es mi veredicto final? Estoy en un conflicto horrible.. de verdad me gustan las protagonistas, incluso cuando me están volviendo loco, menos Matsuri. A Matsuri la odio con toda mi alma.. pero Yuzu y Mei, con todos sus problemas, tienen momentos que de verdad te llegan, la serie tiene esa cualidad extraña que te engancha. Me la pasé quejándome todo el tiempo, pero tampoco podía dejar de verla.. al final, creo que le daría un 7/10. Y es el 7 más conflictivo y confuso que he dado en mi vida.. lo visual, la música y el potencial en bruto son geniales, el guion, el ritmo y la lógica de los personajes son un 4 o un 5. El promedio da como resultado una serie que disfruté y me hizo enojar al mismo tiempo.. y bueno, eso es todo por hoy, cuidense mucho! Byebye!
