My first time in the orchestra pit at the Teresa Carreño Theater: Playing The Nutcracker [Eng/Spa]

These last few days have been completely crazy, and I didn't want to let any more time go by without sharing with you what I've been through and am still going through in Caracas.

As you know, I moved here recently, and everything has been new to me. I'm currently staying in Guarenas (although I'm about to move closer to Caracas and my workplace), so I've had to learn my way around: from getting to know the areas there to figuring out the Caracas Metro to get to rehearsals. I've walked a lot around La Candelaria, Chacao, and Altamira; the city is huge, but little by little I'm getting the hang of it.

Estos últimos días han sido una locura total y no quería dejar pasar más tiempo sin compartirles lo que he vivido y estoy viviendo en Caracas.

Como saben, me mudé hace poco y todo ha sido nuevo para mí. Actualmente me estoy quedando en Guarenas (aunque ya estoy por mudarme más cerca de Caracas y mi lugar de trabajo) así que me ha tocado aprender a moverme: desde conocer las zonas de allá hasta entenderle el ritmo al Metro de Caracas para llegar a los ensayos. He caminado bastante por La Candelaria, Chacao y Altamira; la ciudad es enorme, pero poco a poco le voy agarrando el hilo.

Being at the Teresa Carreño Cultural Complex is a big responsibility. It is one of the most important theaters in Latin America, inaugurated in the 1980s, and its architecture is impressive. Playing in the Ríos Reyna Hall is a dream for many, and it is a hall designed with incredible acoustics for large orchestras and ballets.

I had never played in an orchestra pit before, and the feeling is unique. Being down there while the whole performance is happening above is something I will never forget. It's a different perspective; it's not just playing, but supporting what the audience sees on stage.

Estar en el Complejo Cultural Teresa Carreño es una responsabilidad grande. Es uno de los teatros más importantes de América Latina, inaugurado en los años 80, y su arquitectura es impresionante. Tocar en la Sala Ríos Reyna es el sueño de muchos y es una sala diseñada con una acústica increíble para grandes orquestas y ballets.

Nunca había tocado en un foso y la sensación es única. Estar ahí abajo mientras arriba sucede toda la obra es algo que no voy a olvidar. Es una perspectiva distinta, no solo es tocar, sino ser el soporte de lo que el público ve en el escenario.

I've only been playing with them for a few days, and the energy has been really good, which helps me a lot because I'm only weeks away from my audition. These days have been pure learning, both musically and personally. Being in the pit requires a different kind of concentration, and being in Caracas has taken me out of my comfort zone.

Between rehearsals, trips from Guarenas, and the hustle and bustle of the city, I feel like I've grown a lot in a very short time. I'm very grateful for this opportunity; it's my first time experiencing ballet from the inside, and it's an experience that is having a big impact on me as a musician.

Apenas tengo unos días tocando con ellos y la energía ha sido muy buena, lo cual me ayuda mucho porque estoy a solo semanas de mi audición. Estos días han sido de puro aprendizaje, tanto musical como personal. Estar en el foso me exige una concentración distinta, y estar en Caracas me ha sacado de mi zona de confort.

Entre los ensayos, los viajes desde Guarenas y el corre-corre de la ciudad, siento que he crecido mucho en muy poco tiempo. Me siento muy agradecido por esta oportunidad; es mi primera vez viviendo el ballet desde adentro y es una experiencia que me está marcando mucho como músico.

We are playing Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker, which is probably the most famous ballet in the world. It premiered in Russia in 1892 and, although it was not a complete success at first, today it is a global Christmas tradition.

In Venezuela, the Teresa Carreño production is one of the most iconic. The music is demanding, with passages that we all know but that, when performed by an orchestra, require absolute precision. Being there with my new colleagues, getting to know each other and gelling in record time, has been a constant challenge.

Estamos tocando el Cascanueces de Tchaikovsky, que es probablemente el ballet más famoso del mundo. Se estrenó en 1892 en Rusia y, aunque al principio no fue un éxito total, hoy es una tradición navideña global.

En Venezuela, la producción del Teresa Carreño es una de las más emblemáticas. La música es exigente, tiene fragmentos que todos conocemos pero que, al momento de ejecutarlos en la orquesta, requieren de una precisión absoluta. Estar ahí con mis nuevos compañeros, conociéndonos y acoplándonos en tiempo récord, ha sido un reto constante.

Another incredible highlight of this season was having the opportunity to work with three different conductors: Elisa Vegas, Alfredo Rugeles, and Alfonso Chollet. Each has their own way of conducting the orchestra and interpreting Tchaikovsky's music, which forces you as a musician to be super attentive and adapt quickly to their different conducting styles. It was a master class in every rehearsal and every performance, learning from the experience and vision of each of them.

Otro punto increíble de esta temporada fue tener la oportunidad de trabajar con tres directores distintos: la maestra Elisa Vegas, el maestro Alfredo Rugeles y el maestro Alfonso Chollet. Cada uno tiene su propia forma de llevar la orquesta y de interpretar la música de Tchaikovsky, lo que te obliga como músico a estar súper atento y a adaptarte rápido a sus diferentes estilos de dirección. Fue una clase magistral en cada ensayo y en cada función, aprendiendo de la experiencia y la visión de cada uno de ellos.

In total, I played 11 performances, and although it sounds exhausting, the truth is that every time I went down into the pit, it felt like the first time. Maintaining energy and precision during so many performances is a challenge of endurance, but seeing the hall full and knowing that you are part of such an important tradition keeps you motivated. I ended up tired but very satisfied.

En total fueron 11 funciones las que me tocó tocar, y aunque suena agotador, la verdad es que cada vez que bajaba al foso se sentía como la primera vez. Mantener la energía y la precisión durante tantas presentaciones es un reto de resistencia, pero ver la sala llena y saber que eres parte de esa tradición tan importante te mantiene motivado. Terminé cansado pero muy satisfecho.

Apart from the experience of playing, I had the opportunity to sit in the audience as a spectator to watch The Nutcracker with my girlfriend and friends. Seeing my own colleagues from the outside, hearing the power of the orchestra, and watching the coordination of the dancers on stage filled my heart in a different way. As a musician, sometimes you focus so much on the notes that you forget the magnitude of what we are creating, and witnessing that magic from the audience was undoubtedly the best Christmas gift I could have received.

Aparte de la experiencia de tocar, tuve la oportunidad de sentarme en la sala como espectador para ver el Cascanueces junto a mi novia y mis amistades. Ver a mis propios compañeros desde afuera, escuchar la potencia de la orquesta y ver la coordinación de los bailarines en escena fue algo que me llenó el corazón de una forma distinta. Como músico, a veces uno se enfoca tanto en las notas que olvida la magnitud de lo que estamos creando, y ser testigo de esa magia desde el público fue, sin duda, el mejor regalo de navidad que pude recibir.

Ending last year in this way, after so many unexpected events and changes that I had to go through, was truly magical. Sitting there, enjoying the fruits of everyone's efforts and sharing it with the people I love, made me feel very grateful for life. It was the perfect ending to an intense year and the best motivation for everything that lies ahead with my audition and my new stage in Caracas.

Cerrar el año pasado de esta manera, después de tantas eventualidades y cambios que me tocaron vivir, fue algo realmente mágico. Estar ahí sentado, disfrutando del fruto del esfuerzo de todos y compartiéndolo con las personas que quiero, me hizo sentir muy agradecido con la vida. Fue el cierre perfecto para un año intenso y la mejor motivación para todo lo que viene con mi audición y mi nueva etapa en Caracas.
