Pre-Fair
My first visits to La Cabaña left me in awe. While the iconic colonial fortress of my city, the Castillo San Pedro de la Roca, now the Museum of Piracy in Cuba, is enormous and impressive, La Cabaña has its own unique qualities. First, its proximity, as it is located in a very accessible part of the city. Second, its architecture. Those colonial fortresses with thick walls, vaulted ceilings, the stone eroded by time and the elements, the history embedded within its walls. The sunsets at La Cabaña are breathtaking, as I witnessed on the first day of setup, when I realized the work ahead would be intense and demanding.

It wasn’t just the pre-fair communication campaign (my actual work content), but also the series of tasks required to make the Children’s Pavilion, managed by my publishing house, look beautiful and attract visitors. I painted the ugliest shields anyone has ever seen (yes, they turned out horrible, I have to admit 😭—it had been years since I last painted). I helped clean and organize. I wrapped many books to give away as "blind dates," since the Fair coincided with February 14th. I even helped unload a truck full of books in record time. I was in "guerrilla mode" and came home exhausted.

Tour of the Children’s Pavilion

The Pavilion had various rooms and spaces. First, the "secret office," our operations base, the backstage area. In the next vaulted room was the Dora Alonso Room. There, we set up the Bookkuba project, where they sold various books and related products while organizing activities for young people. The decor was inspired by the dark art of children’s tales. Every corner was perfect for a selfie, and people took full advantage of it.

Next was The Witch’s Workshop, the vaulted room where we let the Wicca and Echando Humo projects work their magic. The combination of magic and steampunk was excellent, and the space also attracted a lot of visitors, with impressive lines.

There, I had my tarot read and asked to dress up for a selfie, but I used my status as a project colleague to request an outfit that wasn’t one of the ones they had prepared for that purpose (Wicca or Harry Potter universe), but rather a steampunk outfit with pieces handmade by the team. The leader of Echando Humo (Yoel, a super cool guy with enviable patience) dressed me personally, and I was thrilled 😁.

Around the corner, in the next vaulted room, we had FreakZONE in collaboration with the Embassy of Japan in Cuba. Anime, manga, and Japanese culture all in one place. Everyone who entered had access to free workshops on origami, Japanese calligraphy, furoshiki, and the opportunity to try on kimonos with their accessories while instructors explained their history and proper use.

I confess I can’t stand pink or overly feminine outfits. I never wear clothes with floral patterns or decorations (except for natural flowers in my hair). But I’m a fan of fashion history, and I wasn’t going to miss this opportunity... and I think I’ve never looked so feminine, elegant, and... I don’t know, wearing a beautiful floral kimono, holding a parasol, a pair of books masterfully wrapped in a pink cloth, and a floral hair accessory 😅.

Finally, there was the "El Cochero Azul" bookstore, where our publishing house’s books were sold. Sumat, the transmedia technology solutions project that collaborates with us, was also there. I confess that in all the tours I gave of our Pavilion (and there were many, but I’ll talk about that in the next post), I emphasized the table where you could listen to our audiobooks and watch our children’s stories in augmented reality! Something that even amazed international visitors I brought there.

We also had a huge screen constantly playing our book trailers (something we pioneered in Cuba 😎) as well as animated shorts and children’s music videos. The lines here were also long, and we became a reference point (to the left of the screen, below the screen, etc.).

That’s it for the Pavilion tour. As for the actual work, what we did, the authors I met, and more, I’ll tell you in the next post 😘.

Pre-Feria

Ayudé a limpiar, acomodar.

https://images.ecency.com/DQmeuH5516dVmZ5RBkgCPMFmtCDhrSBZduj132VSjZXJJnz/1740689960188.jpg
