In one of the many movies I have saved on Blu-Ray, the teaser for Arthur Christmas always appears and for many years I was curious about it; yesterday, as a sort of celebration for getting out of college vacation, I took the opportunity to watch it and now it has become one of my favorite animated movies.

Within the first 15 minutes, I knew I was going to love Arthur Christmas. The fluidity in the elves' movements shows good animation work and is mesmerizing, and besides, isn't it interesting to see all the process and technology Santa must need to deliver all those presents in one night?

I like that they gave us a different perspective than what we are used to like, for example, that already Santa's effort is minimal, as the elves are the special force delivering the presents and that his son Steve is the mind behind it all. The iconic sleigh and the legendary reindeer were replaced by a giant ship with invisibility mechanisms, capable of being the main center of operations for Christmas night.

I felt like a little girl again, but this time with the answers to how Santa could leave me under the tree exactly the gift I asked for. Being able to see all the work behind making it all possible was wonderful and I think that's one of the reasons I liked it so much.

The main character in this film is not Santa, as we can already tell from its title, but one of his sons, Arthur Christmas, a real fan of his father's work and who reads and answers every single letter sent by the millions of children around the world. He is a clumsy and fearful character, but his tenderness and dedication to deliver the only missing gift this Christmas is admirable.

As his opposite, we have his brother Steve, who has been in charge of the logistics and technical side of gift-giving for years. His frustration after realizing that his father was not yet ready to give up his position as Santa is understandable, even if this has made him lose the true meaning of Christmas. He's efficient at his job, but that's all that matters to him.

One of my favorite characters is bisaSanta, now retired years ago, he is enjoyable for his rants and tales of how in his day it was much more difficult without so much technology. So long away from the spotlight, it gives him a reason to help Arthur in his mission, and thus return to be that figure admired by all children.

Don't be fooled, just because it's an animated film doesn't mean it lacks deep messages and complex relationships. No character is perfect, on several occasions we will see their insecurities of being nobody if they are not Santa come to the surface, as their self-esteem and decisions revolve around being the representative of Christmas.

Arthur Christmas reminds us that, despite differences and disagreements, spending time with our loved ones should be our priority. Add to this, if we keep the Christmas spirit we had as children in our hearts, the magic will happen on its own.

En unas de las tantas películas que tengo guardadas en Blu-Ray, siempre aparece el teaser de Arthur Christmas y por muchos años me dió curiosidad; ayer, como una especie de celebración por salir de vacaciones de la universidad, aproveché de verla y ahora se convirtió en una de mis películas animadas favoritas.

Con los primeros 15 minutos, supe que Arthur Christmas me iba a encantar. La fluidez en los movimientos de los duendes demuestra un buen trabajo de animación y resulta hipnotizante y, además, ¿no es interesante ver todo el proceso y tecnología que debe necesitar Santa para entregar todos esos regalos en una noche?

Me gusta que nos hayan dado una perspectiva diferente a la que estamos acostumbrados como, por ejemplo, que ya el esfuerzo de Santa es mínimo, pues los duendes son la fuerza especial que entregan los regalos y que su hijo Steve es la mente detrás de todo. El icónico trineo y los legendarios renos fueron reemplazados por una nave gigante con mecanismos de invisibilidad, capaz de ser el principal centro de operaciones para la noche de navidad.

Me sentí una niña pequeña de nuevo, pero esta vez con las respuestas de cómo Santa podía dejarme debajo del árbol exactamente el regalo que pedí. Ser capaz de ver todo el trabajo que hay detrás para hacer todo eso posible, fue maravilloso y creo que es una de las razones por las cuales me gustó tanto.

El protagonista en esta película no es Santa, como ya podemos saber por su titulo, sino uno de sus hijos, Arthur Christmas, un auténtico fan del trabajo de su padre y quien lee y responde cada una de las cartas enviadas por los millones de niños del mundo. Es un personaje torpe y miedoso, pero su ternura y dedicación a entregar el único regalo faltante de esta navidad es admirable.

Como su opuesto, tenemos a su hermano Steve, encargado desde hace años sobre la logística y parte técnica en la entrega de regalos. Su frustración tras darse cuenta que su padre aún no estaba listo para abandonar su puesto de Santa es entendible, aunque esto le haya hecho perder el verdadero sentido de la navidad. Es eficiente en su trabajo, pero eso es lo único que le importa.

Uno de mis personajes favoritos es bisaSanta, ya retirado hace años, resulta agradable por su desvaríos y cuentos de cómo en su época era mucho más difícil sin tanta tecnología. Tanto tiempo alejado del centro de atención, le da una razón para ayudar a Arthur en su misión, y así volver a ser esa figura admirada por todos los niños.

No se engañen, el hecho de que sea una película animada no significa que carezca de mensajes profundos y relaciones complejas. Ningún personaje es perfecto, en varias ocasiones veremos cómo salen a relucir sus inseguridades de no ser nadie si no son Santa, pues su autoestima y decisiones giran en torno a ser el representante de la navidad.

Arthur Christmas nos recuerda que, a pesar de que existan diferencias y desacuerdos, pasar tiempo con nuestros seres queridos debe ser nuestra prioridad. Sumándole a esto, si mantenemos en nuestros corazones el espíritu navideño que teníamos de niños, la magia ocurrirá sola.
