Retro Review - One Piece (GBA)

One Piece is my favorite manga by far, but this was not always so, as many grew up watching Dragon Ball in my childhood and over the years I began to like other anime like Naruto, which for several years was my favorite anime and manga, then Naruto was completely ruined in his last story arc and my next favorite manga was Bleach, in those times I started watching Cowboy Bebop which is currently my favorite anime, being Bleach also my favorite manga, although I wouldn't doubt that too much since the last arc of Bleach was also a bit disappointing for me, although the current anime is fixing it quite a bit but that's another story. Already with two big disappointments like Naruto and Bleach, I had to opt for the third great manga/anime of the Shonen Jump, which was the best-selling manga and one of the most popular in history with a huge difference. My love for One Piece was immediate, becoming my favorite manga for over 10 years and my second favorite anime, as the #1 spot is still held by Cowboy Bebop with respect to anime. Despite my One Piece being one of my favorite things I have played very few games based on the anime/manga, I have only played one PlayStation 1 game and one Android game, but there is a GameBoy Advance game that is quite interesting.

So, today's Retro Review is about: One Piece (GBA).

Plot-wise this game covers from the beginning of the original story up to the Loguetown arc, but logically the events and situations in this game differ a little from the anime or manga version for obvious reasons, which can be summarized as being a video game based on an audio-visual product, with respect to the manga and in the aspect of reading and visualization, with respect to the manga, it is logical that in this video game there are some slight changes in how certain things happen, but in the end it is always the same result.So you could say that it is a decent summary of the entire beginning of One Piece up to the Loguetown arc. Graphically it is an extremely colorful game, the character design is very good, with an artistic style and pixel art quite remarkable that makes each character very recognizable, both the main characters, as well as the final bosses, which are several of the most classic characters of One Piece, as well as the design of the normal enemies that we find in the scenarios are very good.

Musically it is very good, with melodies that adapt perfectly to the theme of One Piece, as well as in the moments of action and even comedy that we will live in this pirate adventure. The music is varied although I do not remember hearing any of the most emblematic melodies of the anime, which seems quite strange to me and I think it was very missing, since it is impossible to see One Piece without its most emblematic and epic musical themes, however in general terms the music is very good, lively, with lots of rhythm and generally adequate music for a game that like this, we are in constant action, punching and kicking enemies. The sound effects are very good, forceful and are heard well, plus there is quite a variety of effects, so you will not get bored of always listening to the same thing and it does not become monotonous. What is missing is some digital voices of the characters when they perform an attack, since this is one of the most recognizable, epic and remembered aspects and characteristics of the anime.

One Piece (GBA) is a game with a theme and mechanics quite similar to the game Dragon Ball Advanced Adventure and is that in this One Piece game we are facing almost a game of the beat 'em up genre, with Luffy as the main character and the only playable character, as characters like Zoro, Nami, Usopp and Sanji will only be support characters, which its function is to perform a special attack. These support characters will be obtained as we advance in the story and we get to the exact moment when Luffy meets each of them. It is a fairly basic game, but entertaining, there will be some platforming sections in the scenarios but above all, we will have to deal violence with our protagonist Luffy to each NPC who deigns to confront us. We will have battles against final bosses, which will be in the purest style of a classic fighting game, these boss fights will be against characters we know in the anime/manga, each of them presenting their own fighting style. This is really a very entertaining game even for those people who have never seen One Piece, but it is especially a game for those characters who, like me, are One Piece fans.

One Piece es mi manga favorito con gran diferencia, pero esto no siempre fue asi, ya que como muchos crecí viendo Dragon Ball en mi niñez y con el pasar de los años me empezaron a gustar otros animes como Naruto, el cual por varios años fue mi anime y manga favorito, posteriormente Naruto se arruinó por completo en su último arco argumental y mi próximo manga favorito fue Bleach, en esos tiempos empecé a ver Cowboy Bebop el cual es actualmente mi anime favorito, siendo también Bleach mi manga favorito, aunque eso no dudaría mucho ya que el ultimo arco de Bleach también fue un poco decepcionante para mí, aunque el anime actual lo está arreglando bastante pero eso es otra historia. Ya con dos grandes decepciones como Naruto y Bleach tenía que optar por el tercera gran manga/anime de la Shonen Jump, el cual era el manga más vendido y de los más populares de la historia con una enorme diferencia. Mi amor por One Piece fue inmediato, convirtiéndose en mi manga favorito desde hace más de 10 años y mi segundo anime favorito, ya que el puesto nro. 1 lo sigue ocupando Cowboy Bebop con respecto al anime. A pesar de mi One Piece es de mis cosas favoritas he jugado muy pocos juegos basados en el anime/manga, tan solo he jugado un juego de PlayStation 1 y otro juego para Android, pero existe un juego para GameBoy Advance bastante interesante.

Por lo que, la Retro Review de hoy es sobre: One Piece (GBA).

Argumentalmente este juego abarca desde el inicio de la historia original hasta el arco de Loguetown, pero lógicamente los acontecimientos y situaciones en este juego difieren un poco con su version del anime o del manga por motivos obvios, los cuales se resumen a que al ser un videjuego basado en un producto audio-visual, con respecto al manga y en el aspecto de lectura y visualización, con respecto al manga, es lógico que en este videojuego hayan algunos ligeros cambios en como suceden ciertas cosas, pero al final siempre es el mismo resultado. Por lo que se podría decir que es un decente resumen de todo el inicio de One Piece hasta el arco de Loguetown. Gráficamente es un juego sumamente colorido, el diseño de los personajes es muy bueno, con un estilo artístico y de pixel art bastante destacable que hace que cada personaje sea muy reconocible, tanto los personajes principales, así como los jefes finales, los cuales son varios de los personajes más clásicos de One Piece, así como también el diseño de los enemigos normales que nos encontramos en los escenarios son muy buenos.

Musicalmente es muy bueno, con melodías que se adaptan perfectamente a la temática de One Piece, así como en los momentos de acción e incluso comedia que viviremos en esta aventura pirata. La música es variada aunque no recuerdo haber escuchado alguna de las melodías más emblemáticas del anime, lo cual me parece bastante extraño y creo que hizo mucha falta, ya que es imposible ver One Piece sin sus temas musicales más emblemáticos y épicos, sin embargo en términos generales la música está muy bien, animada, con mucho ritmo y en general música adecuada para un juego que como este, estamos en constante acción, golpeando y pateando enemigos. Los efectos de sonido son muy buenos, contundentes y se escuchan bien, además de que hay bastante variedad de efectos, por lo que no va a llegar a aburrir de escuchar siempre lo mismo y no llega a ser monótono. Lo que sí hizo falta es algunas voces digitales de los personajes al momento de realizar un ataque, ya que esto es uno de los aspectos y características más reconocibles, épicas y recordadas del anime.

One Piece (GBA) es un juego con una temática y mecánicas bastante similar al juego Dragon Ball Advanced Adventure y es que en este juego de One Piece estamos ante prácticamente un juego del género beat 'em up, siendo Luffy el personaje principal y el único personaje jugable, ya que personajes como Zoro, Nami, Usopp y Sanji solo serán personajes de apoyo, los cuales su función es realizar un ataque especial. A estos personajes de apoyo los iremos obteniendo mientras avancemos en la historia y llegamos al momento exacto argumentalmente cuando Luffy los conoce a cada uno de ellos. Es un juego bastante básico, pero entretenido, habrán algunas secciones de plataformeo en los escenarios pero sobre todo, tendremos que repartir violencia con nuestro protagonista Luffy a cada NPC que se digne a enfrentarnos. Tendremos batallas contra jefes finales, los cuales serán al más puro estilo de un juego de pelea clásico, estas peleas contra jefes serán en contra de personajes que conocemos en el anime/manga, presentando cada uno de ellos un estilo de pelea propio. Realmente este es un juego muy entretenido incluso para aquellas personas que nunca han visto One Piece, pero especialmente es un juego para aquellas personajes que, como yo, somos fanáticos de One Piece.
