CBC Amber Weiss and Snacks Mid Conference for #BeerSaturday
55 comments
My fiancé and I are again in the dreaded long-distance relationship due to various commitments. This puts some strain on the relationship in multiple ways, especially when I have a busy conference-filled week like the past week.
But nothing speaks as loud as beer and snacks!
My fiancé called me one morning asking if I would be home. I was suspicious but then the bell rang and a package was delivered. I knew she was up to something! I opened the package, lo and behold, there was beer and snacks!
She knew about the conference, obviously, and she thought about treating me (she also knows that I will not look after myself when I am busy with conference weeks).
It was a gruelling week, with 9 am to 9 pm conferences. At least for me. I like to participate in as much as possible, even if it means draining me mentally.
But lucky for me, I had a fiancé who looked after me! She knows just how much I like my beers, and snacks, so she thought about what I might be needing for the week, and she was right!
My presentation for the conference was on Friday morning, so I left the beer for a while in the fridge, opened some snacks, and listened to some fantastic (and some dreary) presentations on philosophy.
But this is about the beer, so let me just quickly discuss my tactic to devour this box.
The first day consisted of pringles, peanuts, and half the pack of "droëwors" or dried sausage.
The second day was a repeat of the first.
And the third day, the day of my presentation was tackled firstly by having copious amounts of coffee, stress regarding my presentation, and then the sudden release of all this pressure with the sweet KitKat and the heavenly Amber Weiss from CBC brewer, or the Cape Brewing Company. And that first sip, just after my conference presentation (which was online) was beyond heavenly...
The pour was a little bit off. I mean, I just finished my presentation, it was a quick coffee break, and I was still shaking a bit from the stress. But I needed to celebrate with a beer!
Besides the lousy pour, the first smell was incredible. Weiss smelling, yeasty, fruity, but linked with an underlying caramel-malt that just waited to be drunk. Because of the bad pour, there was obviously more oxidation, and I smelled the beer in the air more than I should have.
And it was funny. The stress from the week disappeared with the first sip. It was heavenly, a deep caramel undertone, with the sweet yeasty and fruity taste classic to the Weiss we find here in South Africa. It was a perfect balance between all of the last mentioned.
However, the beer was a bit watery, it did not have a well-rounded full-bodied taste, which you get from heavier beers. Even though there is some pronounced taste due to the higher ABV, it was not as "rounded" and full-bodied as I would have liked it.
Besides that, it was a perfect beer, one that I sipped on while watching the last couple of presentations, knowing that mine was over. What a perfect gift from my fiancé.
The beer was a deep amber colour, with a perfectly white and beautiful head. The lacing was not that good on this beer, but nothing to complain about. I also think this was due to my bad pouring skills in this odd beer glass. I am sure it is not the preferred Weiss glass. But it was the one that I grabbed!
My @urban.scout once again just proved that one can love via a beer. Beer, the love language only a few will understand! Jokes aside, this was a seriously good beer, made even better after the stress of the presentation I had to give.
I hope that you cracked open a cold beer, enjoying it family and friends, or even enjoying it alone. There is nothing like a fine beer!
Enjoy and stay safe.
All of the musings and writings are my drunken own. The photographs are also my own, taken with my Nikon D300.
