December is always a very special month for us Filipino Catholics. It is the season of Simbang Gabi, family and meaningful church activities. Aside from making our chapel Belen, my co churchmates and I decide to make a simple bamboo Christmas star covered with white cellophane. It was a small project, but it became very meaningful because we did it together, and everyone had fun.

Materials We Used
We wanted everything to be simple and easy to get, so we used:

  • Bamboo sticks (thin and dry)
  • Glue and glue gun
  • Optional: Rugby (cheaper than glue)
  • White cellophane

We also made sure everything was affordable and reusable. It is amazing what you can make with simple materials and teamwork!

Procedure:

Prepare the bamboo Sticks, we started by cutting the bamboo sticks into equal lengths. These sticks would be the skeleton of our star. It is important that the bamboo is dry. So it doesn’t break easily. While some of us cut the bamboo, others helped sort and clean the sticks. My daughter was very excited to join. She helped pass the bamboo and learn how to work together with others. This step already made everyone happy because even small tasks feel fun when you are with friends and family.

Make the Star Skeleton
We laid the bamboo sticks on the floor to form a star shape. We made two triangles that overlapped to create a five-point star. One the shape looked balance; we glued the joints carefully. Some of the joints were strengthened with ruby sticks for extra support. It required patience but everyone helped each other. We encouraged one another and even gently teased each other while working. It reminded me that no work is hard when people help each other, especially for the church.

After forming the star, we added extra bamboo sticks inside the frame. This made stronger and more stable. We all took turns holding the bamboo while others glued it. This teamwork made the process fast and fun. Children, couples and friends all join ed in. It felt amazing to see everyone contributed to one goal.

Cover with White Cellophane
Then came the fun part! We cut the white cellophane slightly bigger than each section of the star. Carefully we glued the cellophane over the bamboo frame. stretching it gently to avoid wrinkles. The white cellphone gave the star a clean, bright and holy look. My daughter loved helping here, holding the cellophane in place while I glued it, everyone cheered when we saw the star take shape.

Finally, we checked for loose edges and added extra glue where needed. When we turned on the lights, the star glowed softly. It looks simple but very beautiful; The best part was knowing that we made it together with love and devotion.
