The new minimum wage increase in California is going to start this week. Some business owners have already suggested that this could mean more people losing their jobs as the cost of doing business is increasing.
minimum wage in California $20 going up for fast food jobs
Will we see more layoffs now and more adoption of technology to ease those costs? How much will be passed off to customers with increased prices?
This increase in CA makes it the highest wage for fast food employees in the country and now they are going to be competing with higher wages than some small businesses might not be able to afford, who aren't going to be required to pay that $20 minimum.
For those in the job it is good news, unless of course they get cut because of the increased cost of doing business. While it is both supported and criticized, legislative efforts like these shouldn't be required to get employers to pay employees a decent wage. Despite a number of industries and employees seeing wage increases in recent years you can find many who still admit that it isn't keeping up with inflation and the rising cost of living.
