Movie Review: ENTERGALACTIC-Next Door Love Story.
For the first time in one month, I finished an entire hour and a half of a movie by myself. A month doesn’t sound that long, but people that know me and my love for movies know that I can’t go a day without watching a movie. Well, the past month, I fell asleep every time I tried to watch beyond two episodes of Bleach, the current anime I’m watching (which is about 20 minutes per episode). But that changed last weekend.

On Saturday, I watched what I want to describe as one of the best romantic animations I’ve seen in a while. There are only a few ones I’ve seen anyways so that’s probably why I can easily say I rate this one as one of the best. If you’ve seen this and don’t think it’s great, you either have a problem, or my standards for a great movie have dropped very low because I don’t watch as many movies as I used to. That’ll be a lot of people with low standards for a great movie though because have you seen the ratings?
It doesn’t start out great though, but it’s a great animation if you have the patience to let the story unfold.
Please beware that I might be using a lot of vulgar speech in the later part of this post so this is just a heads-up to go back if that triggers you in some way.
About the anime
Entergalactic is an adult animation Netflix special created by Scott Mescudi(Kid Cudi) and Kenya Barris, and released this year 2022.
The name might give a sci-fi vibe, but the movie is actually more of romance, adult animation, and comedy. It features some popular celebrities like Kid Cudi himself, Ty Dolla $ign, Jayden Smith, and Teyana Taylor.

Storyline
The story is about the love life of two neighbors, Jabari and Meador. Jabari is is a graffiti artist who just moved into the neighborhood as the start of his career. He bumps into his next-door neighbor (Meadow) a couple of times and they seem to be getting along really nicely. She even offers to take him on a burger date sometime and to show him around. The two seem to really be kicking things off and connect so well it’s like they’re made for each other.

Both Jabari and Meadow’s friends think they should hook up with the other person, but they both stand their ground on not fucking their neighbor who they just met. At least they hold out for a while, but they eventually do it.

From there it’s all roses and smiles as they go on more dates, hang out and hookup some more everyday. They’re very happy together, for a while. Until one night whiles Jabari is sleeping, Meadow hears his phone chime, and she does the obvious. She opens the text and finds what she’s looking for(or what she fears). A provoking text from Jabari’s ex(Carmen) who he happened to have run into the day when he just arrived in the neighborhood, and the text leads Meadow to believe Jabari is cheating on her with his Ex.

There’s a falling out after that, and the two basically almost become strangers again. But even then, you can clearly see that they both want to get back together, but no one will reach out to the other first, until the last minute when Jabari shows up at Meadow’s art show and asks her to a burger date at the burger shop she took him to when they first met.
My Comments.
I really liked the animation style itself in an odd way I can’t describe. The animation looks a lot like what we see in spiderman into the spiderverse. I think the next generation of animations will be headed in that direction. The music in the show is carefully selected to match the mood and emotion the characters portray.
The animation makers did a great job syncing everything together. The audio, the lip movements, expressions, and music to suit the mood, everything was on point. Most of the songs were by Kid Cudi, the voice behind Jabari.
They also took their time to build the characters’ appearance. The characters have great looks. I personally thought Jabari looked like Burna Boy, but a google search showed me just how much detail they put into building their characters. Jabari is actually voiced by American rapper and actor, Kid Cudi, and I could see Kid Cuddie in his eyes then.

At first, I also thought Meadow looked like Dewanda Wise from the movie Someone Great. I was actually very wrong about this one but that was because Meadow had kind of an afro hair and a nose ring similar to what I saw in Dewanda Wise in the Someone Great movie. My guess for Meadow was just wrong off the charts lol. Meadow is actually voiced by Jessica Renee Williams, an actor I didn’t know about until last night. But man do the characters resemble their voices!

For an animation, you would think that the adult scenes in there would suck (there are adult scenes btw), but it’s pretty okay in my opinion. Not that they show nudity or explicitly erotic or sexual stuff, but their adult scenes are pretty standard. Not showing too much or too less for adults.
One thing I’ll say though is even though I said it gave off the spider man into the spiderverse animation vibe, it still showed some symptoms of lags along the line in some scenes. It just felt like recorded SIMS or Choices video game gameplay in some scenes. Maybe this was just me, but I feel like I caught the animation lagging by just a little bit in some scenes. Maybe that was just my internet though.
The fact that the movie is only 1 hour and 30 minutes makes you think the story will be rushed, but I assure you, it isn’t. The story unfolds slowly until the very end within that 1hour and 30minutes of screen time, and at the end of it, you’re going to be left wanting more.
Lessons from this animation
This is probably dumb to add to my review, but I’m doing it anyways because I feel like it’s important I mention some things we could all learn from the animation.
The movie is very relatable as you can see that the struggles they go through in their love life are things we can relate to around us.
We also see the importance of putting aside your pride and ego when something priceless like the love of your life is at risk. I know the popular internet belief is that everyone is replaceable, but sometimes you really won’t find the same energy twice.
It also shows the importance of trusting your partner and leaving their shit alone. What is it they say these days on TikTok? “If you fuck around, you’ll find out”. Meadow found out when she fucked around on Jabari’s phone. Relationships mean you share secrets and all, but partners still need to respect each other’s privacy.
Another thing we realize is the importance of being open to explanations and not jumping to conclusions. Meadow immediately assumed Jabari was in love with the other girl and was cheating on her when she saw that text when in reality, they just hooked up one time(before he even met Meadow) and his ex just sent that message as a thirst trap or something like that to get Jabari to come over to her place.
Final Comments
I’m not saying this is the best animation ever, but it’s definitely worth the watch if you have the time and you’re into animations. Despite the IMDB rating of 7.4/10, I’ll rate it a cool 10/10 personally and highly recommend it to all animation and anime lovers and people planning on getting into watching anime.
Some people will not want to watch this because it’s an animation, but I assure you, this is just as good an animation as a real movie will be. It is not just a cartoon, people! It’s rated 18+ for a reason, and you should stay clear of children when you hop on this:)
PS: I actually watched this movie on Saturday evening, but couldn’t post this review until today because I’ve been busy. Still didn’t want you guys to miss out on this movie though because it’s a great watch, so I squeezed in some time to get this review done on Saturday. Check out this movie, I tell you!
And uuhhh let me know what you think when you do. Have a great screen time!
