Wild Animals Are Not Pets: The Hidden Reality Behind Exotic Animal Ownership(En-Esp)

I believe that all or most of us have thought at some point about having a wild animal as a pet. The simple idea of having a puma, a primate, or a crocodile as a pet may sound attractive. After all, animals are the highest expression of perfection in nature. However, this idea becomes much more complex in practice due to the lack of knowledge about the subject. Some people may have the necessary resources, sometimes even more than specialized centers. But the debate on this topic has been present and ongoing for decades. Is it really ethical or safe to keep wild animals as pets?

Sometimes we overlook the fact that a wild animal is exactly that: WILD. They are designed to live in complex ecosystems that humans do not fully understand. Even if proper nutrition, large enclosures, and specialized care could be provided, domestic environments will never be able to replicate the natural functioning and, above all, the freedom that these animals need for their development. A clear example is lions, which due to their territorial nature require vast areas to hunt and express behaviors typical of their species. There is no private enclosure or backyard that can offer what their instincts demand.

One argument often mentioned by supporters of these practices is that zoos sometimes do not have enough resources to care for these animals. This is partly true, as in some cases they may face space limitations or lack of funding that makes it difficult to meet each animal’s needs. However, in my opinion, this does not justify keeping them as pets, because they are not pets.

Professional biologists and conservationists are trained to manage animal behavior, nutrition, health, and overall welfare. Not to mention that they work in controlled environments where the risk is practically minimal, both for animals and humans. There have been countless cases of accidents precisely when private owners try to replicate this level of care. It is sad to see exotic pets abandoned, injured, or dead due to human irresponsibility.

Another issue that cannot be ignored is safety. Animals that are born to live in wild environments are often unpredictable and even deadly. Having, for example, a puma as a pet, as I mentioned at the beginning, is not a hobby — it is a responsibility that could cost more than one life. Fortunately, many countries have taken action and have banned the private ownership of animals considered dangerous.

I am fully aware that we cannot change the world overnight. But I do believe this is a good time to instill these values and teachings in our children, since they will hold the future of the world in their hands. It is our responsibility to teach them love and respect for nature and for the other species with whom we share this perfect rock floating in space.

If we are the only beings with reasoning on Earth, then let us use it. If we are the only conscious animal on this planet, then let us truly be conscious.

Creo que todos o la mayoría de nosotros hemos pensado alguna vez tener a un animal salvaje como mascota. La simple idea de tener un puma, un primate o un cocodrilo de mascota puede sonar atractivo. Después de todo, los animales son la máxima expresión de la perfección en la naturaleza. Pero la idea se vuelve mucho más compleja en la práctica debido al desconocimiento sobre el tema. Puede que algunas personas cuenten con los recursos necesarios, a veces más que centros especializados. Pero el debate sobre este tema está y ha estado latente durante décadas. ¿Es realmente ético o seguro tener animales salvajes como mascota?

A veces pasamos por alto que un animal salvaje es precisamente eso: SALVAJE. Están diseñados para vivir en ecosistemas complejos que los seres humanos ni siquiera entendemos del todo. Incluso si se les pudiera proporcionar una alimentación adecuada, amplios recintos y una atención especializada, los ambientes domésticos jamás van a poder replicar el funcionamiento y sobre todo la libertad que estos animales requieren para su desarrollo. Un ejemplo claro son los leones, que debido a su carácter territorial, necesitan extensas áreas para cazar y expresar comportamientos típicos de su especie. No existe ningún recinto privado o patio trasero que pueda ofrecer lo que su instinto demanda.

Un argumento muy mencionado por los precursores de estas prácticas es que los zoológicos a veces no tienen los recursos suficientes para el cuidado de estos animales. Esto en parte es verdad, en algunos casos pueden tener limitaciones de espacio o simplemente falta de financiamiento que les dificulta suplir las necesidades de cada animal. Sin embargo, y es mi opinión, esto no justifica tenerlos en calidad de mascota porque no lo son.

Los biólogos y conservacionistas profesionales están preparados para manejar el comportamiento, la nutrición, la salud y el bienestar de los animales. Sin dejar de mencionar que trabajan en entornos controlados donde el riesgo es prácticamente nulo. Tanto para los animales como para los seres humanos. Se han dado innumerables casos de accidentes justamente cuando un dueño privado quiere replicar estos cuidados. Es triste ver a una de estas mascotas exóticas abandonada, herida o fallecida debido a la irresponsabilidad humana.

Otro tema que no se puede dejar de mencionar es la seguridad. Los animales que nacieron para vivir en entornos salvajes suelen ser impredecibles, incluso mortales. Tener por ejemplo a un puma como mencioné al principio como mascota no es un pasatiempo, es una responsabilidad que podría costar más de una vida. Por suerte muchos países han tomado cartas en el asunto y han prohibido la posesión como mascotas de animales que se consideran peligrosos.

Soy perfectamente consciente que no podemos cambiar el mundo de golpe. Pero si creo que es buen momento para inculcar estos valores y enseñanzas a nuestros hijos ya que ellos tendrán las riendas del mundo en el futuro. Es nuestra responsabilidad inculcar en ellos el amor y el respeto por la naturaleza, por las demás especies con las que compartimos este pedazo de roca perfecta flotando en el espacio.

Si somos los únicos seres con raciocinio sobre la tierra vamos a usarlo. Si somos el único animal consciente en este planeta pues seamos conscientes de verdad...
