Throughout my life, I've always had some connection to soccer. In the part of the world where I live, most countries have some kind of obsession with this sport. You can smell it in the streets, and I think every kid out there dreams of being a professional player. So, I think this indie game I was given hits the nail on the head for a good story.

I'd been eyeing this game since its beta. I was really drawn to the fact that it's made by some My fellow Latin Americans from Ecuador seem to have applied various techniques to create the graphics and integrate some typical locations from their country, so I had plenty of reasons to play it.
Despelote isn't your typical soccer game. It's not about winning cups, million-dollar transfers, or endless stats. Here, the ball isn't a competitive tool; it's a symbol. From the first time I saw it in its beta stage, it caught my attention, not only for its unique aesthetic but also because it felt more like a playable memory than a traditional video game.
What I liked most is how the game captures that feeling of childhood in Latin America: going out into the street with a worn-out ball, playing until dark, improvising rules, dodging cars, listening to the adults talk about politics or soccer while all you want to do is keep kicking. Despelote achieves something difficult: it doesn't over-romanticize, but it also doesn't fall into bleakness. It's honest.
The narrative is subtle. They don't explain everything with endless dialogues or heavy cutscenes. Instead, they let you observe, listen, walk around. There are background conversations, radios playing, casual comments that place you in a very specific time and context. And that's where the magic lies: the game trusts the player, their memory, their ability to connect emotional dots.
Football here isn't the end goal, it's the means. It serves to talk about identity, about the country, about growing up, about how certain seemingly small moments stay with you for life. For those of us who grew up in neighborhoods where a ball could make an entire afternoon, Despelote hits hard, but beautifully.
I really enjoyed it, despite it being a short game of only a few hours. It's not overly elaborate, focusing more on telling a personal story than an adventure that fully utilizes its mechanics. I liked it as a small project; the only downside is the price, which I think is a bit high for what it offers. Otherwise, the experience was quite refreshing, and I can say I have a new studio to follow.
In a market saturated with games that strive to be bigger, louder, and more spectacular, Despelote decides to go in a different direction: to be intimate, local, and human. And honestly, that's greatly appreciated. It's not a game for everyone, but for those who connect with it, it stays with you long after you turn off the screen.

A lo largo de toda mi vida siempre he tenido alguna relacion con el futbol, en la parte del mundo en donde vivo la mayoria de los paises tienen aluna fijacion por este deporte, se puede oler en las calles y creo que cada niño que está por ahi puede verse soñando siendo un jugador profesional, asi que este indie que me regalaron creo que da en el clavo para una buena historia

Venia viendo este juego desde su beta, me atraia bastante que está hecho por unos compatriotas latinoamericanos de Ecuador y que parece que han aplicado varias tecnicas para hacer los graficos e integrar algunas localizaciones tipicas de su pais, asi que tenia razones de sobra para jugarlo
Despelote no es el típico juego de fútbol. No trata de ganar copas, ni de fichajes millonarios, ni de estadísticas infinitas. Aquí el balón no es una herramienta competitiva, es un símbolo. Desde que lo vi por primera vez en su etapa beta me llamó la atención, no solo por su estética distinta, sino porque se sentía más como un recuerdo jugable que como un videojuego tradicional.
Lo que más me gustó es cómo el juego captura esa sensación de infancia en Latinoamérica: salir a la calle con un balón gastado, jugar hasta que oscurece, improvisar reglas, esquivar carros, escuchar a los adultos hablar de política o de fútbol mientras tú solo quieres seguir pateando. Despelote logra algo difícil: no romantiza en exceso, pero tampoco cae en lo gris. Es honesto.
La narrativa es sutil. No te lo explican todo con diálogos eternos ni cinemáticas pesadas. Más bien te dejan observar, escuchar, caminar. Hay conversaciones de fondo, radios encendidas, comentarios casuales que te van ubicando en una época y un contexto muy específicos. Y ahí está la magia: el juego confía en el jugador, en su memoria, en su capacidad de conectar puntos emocionales.
El fútbol aquí no es el fin, es el medio. Sirve para hablar de identidad, de país, de crecer, de cómo ciertos momentos aparentemente pequeños se quedan contigo toda la vida. Para quienes crecimos en barrios donde una pelota podía resolver una tarde entera, Despelote pega duro, pero bonito.
Me ha gustado mucho a pesar de ser un juego corto de apenas algunas horas, no demasiado elaborado, mas para contar una historia personal mas que una aventura que aproveche sus mecanicas, me ha gustado como proyecto pequeño, lo unico es el precio que creo esta un poco elevado para lo que ofrece, del resto bastante fresca la experiencia y puedo decir que tengo un nuevo estudio para seguir
En un mercado saturado de juegos que buscan ser más grandes, más ruidosos y más espectaculares, Despelote decide ir en otra dirección: ser íntimo, ser local, ser humano. Y honestamente, eso se agradece muchísimo. No es un juego para todos, pero para quien conecta con él, se queda dando vueltas en la cabeza mucho después de apagar la pantalla.
