V walk in Ku-ring Gai Wildflower Garden plus a bit : January 28 2026

Heading into a slow day after the late nights. Brain is not geared up to get organised to get out on a train/bike ride early enough. Took the car to go look for midge orchids in two different places in St Ives. One is a known spot for a rare orchid and I know where they are

I like to find a theme for the photos - done scribbly gums and yellow this week already. What struck me here? It is a scribbly gum. It is yellow

First photo of the day was this St Andrews Cross spider - there is yellow. But that is not it

A tree on the ground. Not a scribbly gum and not yellow

Sribbly gum and yellow - can you see it yet? The funny thing is I have never noticed so many trees like this

Last clue photo - not a scribbly gum and not yellow - but it has formed a V above the ground

One last V-shaped tree - a bit of fun to bring an orchid-free walk to life

NSW coral heath flower - just a few around. No midge orchids in the extended area I saw last year

Did find orchid leaves - green back and front says tongue orchid

There were 3 plants here all seeded - cryptostylis subulata

A flash of purple off the path - twining glycine. Just one seen

There were a few of these flowering. They fit the yellow theme. Hibbertia flower

Spider lily at the start of the top walk. Decided to skip the walk down the hill and try a different track on the way home

Signage for this track. Runs level for quite a way before starting the drop down to the creek. Will wall some of the way down as there are known orchid sites down there

Until the last storm this tree was not a V. It is now having lost a big limb

Checking on the snake orchid sites - this is the first I found here. The flowers have been and seeded - pods on the right hand side just above the branch

A different hibbertia

Got a bit confused on ID for this. At the visitor centre they called this leptospermum squarrosum. It is square but I thought they were white. Have to look it up

Did find another snake orchid. They like scribbly gums and seem to find a spot from 2 to 4 metres above ground. This one in a burned out heart of the tree. How they get here is a good question? Easy. They come from up higher. How they get there? Good thought

Surprised to find a flannel flower open - just one

Found one more snake orchid in a similar spot. In a burned split in a scribbly gum. The questions above remain

Disappointing to find no midge orchids but there was plenty to enjoy. And got a good number of steps.

Spent the afternoon migrating Fitbit account over to Google ahead of the cut over. It worked and the Actifit side worked just fine for the 1st post

Dinner was spaghetti bolognese - sauce was made the day before. Just had to cook spaghetti and grate some cheese

Another late night writing up a Big Themes blog on Nuclear and Uranium for a friend. Meeting tomorrow
