Moon Mysticism ~ Timing Life to the Lunar Phases ~ New Moon

The lunar calendar is still used by many specifically for timing shorter cycles and tending to a garden. While solar astronomy requires precise mathematics, lunar astronomy is much more accessible to non-scientists. The moon's phase position is visible with the naked eye against the backdrop of the stars and continues to keep stable time.

As an artist and gardener I find that timing projects and sowing seeds with the phases of the moon to be a helpful tool. In general the days before a full moon are best for planting seeds and the days around the dark moon are best for transplanting though there are many nuances to consider. The new moon is, to me, a great time for starting new projects where work and art are concerned.
Currently the moon is in the new moon phase which mean it is close to the sun and will slowly be orbiting to the other side of earth over the next two weeks.
The new moon represents new beginnings, fresh starts and growth.
During this phase I like to begin a new list of goals for the month ahead. This is also a nice time to start re-organizing a section of my or beginning a new phases of a long term project.
For example in my work as an herbalist I am launching a new segment of my business plan, to provide more information about herbalism via a new social media platform. This platform is video-based so I am also learning a new skill of cellphone videography.
And in my magical practice I am re-newing my connection with this lunar oracle card deck ~ El Oraculo de la Luna.
This deck delves into an aspect of lunar timings that is totally new to me; the lunar mansions. Unlike the lunar phases the mansions is a system based upon the position of the moon in the night sky, with the constellations of the zodiac as their backdrop. The deck also includes the phases of the moon in great detail as seen in the image above.
The next couple of weeks while the new moon slowly grows into a full moon I will be studying and building up energy for the full moon which, to me at least, is a time to celebrate all the blessings in my life and the success of the projects I am working on. While the moon is waning (going from full to dark) I will then focus on transplanting plants in the garden and preparing the soil (& myself) for the rest that is to come during the dark moon phase. More of that in a future post.
