DIY: Organizer bags with French stitching (Eng - Esp)

I wish you a happy and prosperous New Year 2026, may love, peace, harmony, health, and prosperity abound in every home, and may the projects and goals set for this year come to fruition. On this occasion, I'm sharing a simple yet useful project when it comes to organization. I started the year organizing my kitchen utensils; there are some I don't use often and need to store in a space-saving way.
While searching for ideas and storage options for these utensils, I thought of a box, a black plastic bag, and a fabric bag—my trusty scrapbook. It's always my go-to for these emergency projects, and this time was no exception. While rummaging through my stash, I found two fabric scraps I'd had for several months, and the design seemed so cute and perfect for these organizer bags. The idea is to keep the utensils where they take up less space and are readily available when I need them. A bag seemed ideal because I keep them in one of the drawers, and in the bags, they're safe from dust. To make the bag and give it a neat finish, I used a French stitch, which I really like because it keeps the fabric edges hidden and the finish is very clean. This fabric also tends to shed threads a lot, so this stitch works really well to keep the threads hidden and achieve a tidy finish. I invite you to join me in the crafting process.
Hola amigos artesanos y comunidad #Hivediy, es un placer saludarles, deseo que tenga un feliz y próspero año nuevo 2026, que el amor, paz, armonía salud y prosperidad abunden en cada hogar, que los proyectos y metas trazados para este año puedan hacerse realidad; en esta ocasión les comparto un proyecto sencillo de elaborar, pero útil cuando de organizar se trata, inicié el año organizando los utensilios de cocina, hay algunos que no uso a menudo y necesito guardarlos y que además ocupen poco espacio.
Mientras buscaba ideas y opciones para guardar estos utensilios, pensé en una caja, una bolsa plástica negra y una bolsa de tela, mi súper bolsa de retazos, siempre es la que me auxilia en estos proyectos de emergencia y esta vez no fue la excepción, revisando conseguí dos retazos de tela, que tenía desde hace varios meses y el diseño me pareció muy tierno y apropiado para estas bolsas organizadoras, la idea es mantener los utensilios donde ocupen menos espacio y estén disponibles al momento que los necesite, una bolsa me pareció genial porque los mantengo en una de las gavetas y en las bolsas están a salvo del polvo; para elaborarla y darle un mejor acabado, utilicé la puntada francesa, la cual me gusta mucho, porque mantiene los bordes de la tela ocultos y el acabado es muy limpio, también esta tela tiene la particularidad que suelta mucho los hilos, así que esta costura le viene muy bien para mantener los hilos ocultos y obtener un acabado prolijo, les invito me acompañen en el proceso de elaboración.

The first step was to measure the fabric. Then I cut two rectangles, 140 by 50 centimeters wide. I placed the fabrics wrong sides together and pinned them to begin the French seam. Unlike other seams, this one starts with the wrong sides of the fabric facing each other, and the seam is sewn from the right side, from the edge of the fabric to the inside, leaving a seam allowance of approximately 0.5 or 0.7 millimeters. You can also use the presser foot as a guide. I sewed the two rectangles together, leaving the top open.
Then I removed the excess fabric with zigzag scissors, as I mentioned at the beginning, this fabric sheds a lot of threads and with zigzag scissors you can achieve a clean cut and prevent the threads from coming loose.

Next, I turned the piece right side out. Here, I moved on to the second step of the French seam: covering the previous seam so that it was on the inside (the wrong side). I left approximately one centimeter seam allowance to cover the previous seam. If any threads were loose, this seam would cover them. I sewed with a straight stitch, starting from one side, along the bottom edge, and then to the other end, checking that the first seam was covered.
seguidamente volteé la pieza de tal forma que el lado derecho quede hacia adentro, aquí avancé al segundo paso de la costura francesa, cubrir la costura anterior y que quede hacia adentro (el lado revés), dejé aproximadamente un centímetro de margen, para cubrir la costura anterior, si quedó algún hilo suelto esta lo cubre, cosí con puntada recta iniciando desde uno de los lados, la parte inferior y luego al otro extremo y verifiqué que la primera costura quede cubierta.
The next step was to sew a hem or tunnel at the top, where the drawstring will go to close the bag. Here I made a fold of approximately 2 centimeters, sewed with a straight stitch, now all that remains is to attach the drawstring.
El siguiente paso fue coser un dobladillo túnel en la parte superior, donde irá el cordón para cerrar la bolsa, aquí hice un doblez de aproximadamente 2 centímetros, cosí con puntada recta, ya solo falta colocar el cordón.
To attach the cord, I used a seam ripper to make a hole, cut several lengths of cord, threaded them onto the needle, passed them around the entire perimeter, and then pulled them through the same hole. I sealed the ends of the cord with a lighter and tied a knot, and the bags were finished. I like using a plastic needle because its point isn't as sharp, it's safer, and most importantly, it doesn't tear the fabric when I'm threading the needle through the tunnel.
Para colocar el cordón, con ayuda de un sacacosturas, hice un orificio, corté varias cintas de cordón, la puse en la aguja, pasé por todo el contorno y luego la saco por el mismo orificio, con un yesquero sellé las puntas del cordón e hice un nudo, y ya está terminadas las bolsas; me gusta usar la aguja plástica porque su punta no es tan afilada, es más segura y lo más importante no rompe la tela cuando estoy pasando el hilo por el túnel.
I'm happy with how this bag turned out. It's simple, practical, and the French seam finish is beautiful. Inside, you can't see any threads, just a small fold covering the seams.
With these new bags, I keep utensils I don't use regularly organized, clean, and within easy reach when I need them while preparing food. I hope you find this tutorial helpful.
El resultado de esta bolsa me gustó, es sencilla, práctica y el acabado con costura francesa es hermoso, en la parte interna no se ven hilos solo un pequeño doblez que está cubriendo las costuras.
