Every weekend, in Jakarta, the capital of the Republic of Indonesia, there's a car-free day on several main roads. Cars and motorcycles are prohibited from entering, with only pedestrians allowed.

Weekends, aside from national holidays like Eid al-Fitr, are the time when we can see the air clear of pollution. On busy days, as you know, Jakarta is one of the cities with the highest levels of pollution in the world.

Weekends are a small paradise for commuters because on weekdays, Jalan Sudirman, Jalan Thamrin, and several other roads are completely shut off.

Cars speed along nonstop, polluting the air, even though Jakarta now has a plethora of electric vehicles.

The atmosphere of car free day every Sunday on Jalan Sudirman which is one of the main arterial roads in Jakarta.

I captured the car-free day moment on Sudirman in this #monomad photo community. I used my iPhone X camera with the black and white setting.

Some of the photos here, including the one of General Sudirman, an Indonesian national hero, are immediately visible in black and white against the warm morning sunlight.

If you're in Jakarta and staying around Jalan Thamrin or Sudirman, you should definitely try waking up early when the air is truly fresh.

Besides Jalan Sudirman, I've also enjoyed a similar, even more crowded atmosphere on Jalan Thamrin. I'll post about it in this community later.

Photographing the streets with a smartphone camera is an art in itself, especially when you're running or walking with the crowd. Furthermore, I have to avoid photos that focus on specific individuals, as that can be a sensitive topic and could be subject to legal action.
